Santa Hat
DECEMBER 3, 2018
After designing my Santa Beanie and my Candy Cane Hat, I decided that I needed a traditional Santa hat. My husband and I are surprising our kids with a trip to Disney in a couple weeks and I'm hoping to have one of these hats for each of us to wear for our photo in front of Cinderella's castle. I'm planning to make each hat in a different color so I'll share photos as I finish them. Please tag me on Instagram or Facebook if you make your own!

Tool: extra large pom pom maker
Yarn: white
Firmly and evenly wind your white yarn around each set of arches. After the first set of arches, close them and then wind your yarn around the second set.
Cut the yarn between each set of arches.
Use your scrap piece of white yarn to tie the pom pom in place. I recommend you double/triple knot it.
Carefully open the arches.
Use a hot melt adhesive to place a dab of glue in the center of the pom pom. This will help prevent it from unraveling.
Fluff your pom pom and trim any long ends.
Use a tapestry needle to attach your pom pom to the top of your hat.

I’m confused on the adult Santa hat rd 2 says 12 and so does rd 3. Does this mean 12 total stiches on the end if each if these rounds?
Author
Hi Mary Ann! Yes, you will have 12 stitches at the end of rounds 2 and round 3. You are alternating between a round where you increase and a round where there are no increases. If you look at the next few rounds you will see that at the end of rounds 4 and 5, you will have 16 stitches. At the end of rounds 6 and 7, you will have 20 stitches. Let me know if you have any questions. -Melissa
Is the toddler for a 1 to 2 yr old and a child size 2 to 5 years?
Een vraag,ik wil de rode kerstmuts voor mijn kleindochter voor kerst haken maar ze is jl 17 okt. Geboren.heeft u daar ook de maat van.
Hey Melissa! I love the pattern. Because myself and people in my family have big heads lol which round would I increase at?
Author
Thank you, Jessica! To increase the size of the adult hat you can increase again at round 31 (*2 dc, dc in next 16 sts*). This would give you a total of 72 stitches instead of 68.
If you want to make it even larger, make sure you have a round of dc (no increasing) before your next increase. So, round 32 you would just dc in each st and then for round 33 you increase again (*2 dc, dc in next 17 sts*). This would leave you with 76 sts. I hope this makes sense. Let me know if you have any questions. -Melissa
I have a novice question. I’ve only ever crocheted blankets and scarves, but I REALLY want to try this hat. Can you explain what “*2 dc, dc in next 16 sts*” means? Am I doing 2 double crochets in the first stitch and 1 double crochet in the next 16 stitches (I just used this one row as an example)?
Author
Hi Laura! Yes, you are correct. The instructions between the two asterisks (*) should be repeated for the remainder of that round. So, you would make 2 double crochets in the first stitch, double crochet once in the next 16 stitches and repeat that pattern of 2 dc and dc in 16 for the remainder of the round. Hope this helps!
Hello! I want to make a bunch of these for my family. Can you tell me how tall and wide the adult hat should be when finished? I’ve been following your instructions, but it feels like it is massive!
Hi!
How many skeins of each color is needed for the child’s size hat?
Thanks!
Is the gauge the same for all the hats? This gauge seems so small. I had to use a G 4.25 to maintain it.
In rows 4 and 5, your stitch count is off. Should be 18 instead of 16. This also throws off the rest of the following rows by 2.
This pattern is great! Very easy to follow instructions. I made a few for Christmas gifts this year. Thanks so much for the pattern!
I made the child hat today. It was way to big for an 8year old. If I skip the rounds 26 thru 28 just those extra rounds brings it down to the proper size. Other than that, super easy pattern. Works up fast. Thank you for sharing it. Love it!
Awesome pattern! Easy to follow and works up perfectly. Thank you!
Hi! I am using a #4 worsted weight yarn and making an adult sized hat. I just got to row 30 and noticed there are still 18 more rows of red. Is the santa hat supposed to be very long? Or can I stop at a length that is appropriate for my project? Thank you!
Love this pattern, I made 6 hats in a course of 4 days as gifts for Christmas. Love it & thank you!
I stumbled onto your site today. Boy am I happy that I did! Thank you for all of the wonderful things for children and teens that you have furnished patterns to the world. I for one am going to use several of these to make presents for my great-grandchildren and grandchildren this year. I have five great-grands and young grandchildren. Four of my grandchildren are the grown, but I still want to be able to make something for them and my other adult family members. Needless to say, I need to start now and you have certainly made this an excited, fun project for the next several months. Thank you again.
