Granny Square Crochet Pattern Notes
- The granny square pattern is written in US terms.
- You will make the granny square first and then add the axolotl parts.
- The stitch counts are listed at the end of every row/round.
- The granny square is made with the circle to square technique.
- Join each round with a slip stitch to the first stitch made in that round.
- Repeat instructions between the asterisks (*) for the rest of the round.
- The chain at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.

If you find the magic ring/circle tricky, try this easier method for round 1: Chain 3, make 11 dc in the 3rd ch from the hook, join (11 stitches)

Rnd 1: Magic circle, 11 DC, join to first DC (11 stitches)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, make 2 DC in each st, join (22 stitches)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, *2 DC, DC in the next stitch*, join (33 stitches)
Rnd 4: Ch 2, *2 DC, DC in the next 2 sts*, join with white yarn (44 stitches)
White yarn
Rnd 5: Ch 2, *(2 DC, ch-2, 2 DC), DC in the next 10 sts*, join
Rnds 6-8: Ch 2, DC in each st and (2 DC, ch-2, 2 DC) in each ch-2 corner space
Top Gill Pattern
Make 2 using dark pink yarn.
Ch 5, SC in the 2nd ch from hook, HDC in rem 3 chs, ch 4 and turn to work in the backside of the chs, HDC in 3 chs, sc in the last ch, join
Middle Gill Pattern
Make 2 using dark pink yarn.
Ch 6, SC in the 2nd ch from hook, HDC in rem 4 chs, ch 4 and turn to work in the backside of the chs, HDC in 4 chs, sc in the last ch, join
Bottom Gill Pattern
Make 2 using dark pink yarn.
Ch 7, SC in the 2nd ch from hook, HDC in rem 5 chs, ch 4 and turn to work in the backside of the chs, HDC in 5 chs, sc in the last ch, join
Sew the gills to each side of the head, with the pointy ends facing away.
Axolotl Eyes Pattern
Make 2 using black yarn. Leave a long tail for sewing.
Ch 2, make 6 SC in the 2nd ch from hook, fasten off
Sew the eyes to the axolotl’s head.
Axolotl Smile Instructions
Use black yarn to stitch a smile on the axolotl’s face.
