This is a tapestry crochet pattern
This bow square is a beginner tapestry crochet pattern. Tapestry crochet is a crochet technique where you use multiple colors of yarn to create patterns and designs in your projects.
With tapestry crochet, you make color changes following a picture graph (also known as a “grid” or “pixel chart”) or the written instructions.
Tapestry crochet allows for intricate patterns and color work, like this pretty bow crochet pattern.
This square crochet pattern is perfect for beginners!
If you’re new to tapestry crochet, this crochet bow pattern is a fantastic starting point. Why? Because it only uses two colors, making it the perfect project for beginners.
Plus, since it’s a small project, you won’t feel overwhelmed. It’s a great way to practice how to crochet a square with color changes and get comfortable with the tapestry crochet technique.

- Read the graph from right to left ← on odd-numbered rows and left to right → on even-numbered rows.

- → you are working on the “wrong” side” on even-numbered rows.

Color changes
- To change colors, work the last yarn over of a stitch with the new color. This sets up your yarn for the next stitch in the new color.

What are alpha crochet patterns?
Alpha patterns are pixel drawing designs used primarily in tapestry crochet and C2C (corner to corner) crochet techniques to create letters, numbers, or easy pixel art ideas.
These patterns allow crafters to spell out names, messages, or create detailed images and motifs using a pixel grid approach.
Each square on the grid corresponds to a stitch in crochet. These patterns are also commonly referred to as “pixel crochet charts”, “grid crochet patterns”, or “crochet graph patterns”.
Pixel art in crochet design
When I design my tapestry crochet patterns, like this bow square crochet pattern, and my corner to corner crochet patterns, I create pixel charts. These charts are also known as “graphs”, “alpha patterns”, and “grids”.
You can use these pixel crochet patterns not just for crochet but also for knitting, cross-stitch, needlepoint, weaving, tapestry, beadwork, and even pixel art- just like this bow pixel art crochet pattern.
