Why you’ll love this crochet dinosaur blanket pattern

  • Six dinosaur designs: Make a T-rex, triceratops, stegosaurus, parasaurolophus, pterodactyl, and brontosaurus.
  • Graphs and written instructions: Choose the format that is easiest for you to follow.
  • Colorful kids’ blanket: The bright rainbow panels create a cheerful dinosaur blanket for children.
  • Mix-and-match panels: Combine these dinosaurs with panels from my other C2C blanket collections.
  • Simple construction: Crochet each square separately, then seam the finished panels together.
  • Easy to personalize: Change the dinosaur colors or background yarn to match a nursery or bedroom.

What is corner-to-corner crochet?

Corner-to-corner crochet, usually called C2C, is worked diagonally in small groups of chains and double crochet stitches. Each group forms one C2C block.

You begin in one corner, increase until the panel reaches its widest point, and then decrease toward the opposite corner. Color changes create the dinosaur image inside each square.

In this pattern, every dinosaur panel measures 40 × 40 C2C blocks.

How this dinosaur blanket is made

The blanket is made from six individual dinosaur panels:

  • T-rex
  • Triceratops
  • Stegosaurus
  • Parasaurolophus
  • Pterodactyl
  • Brontosaurus

Crochet each panel separately using its graph or written instructions. Add an optional single crochet border around each square, then arrange the panels in two columns and three rows.

Sew the panels together and finish the outer edge with a simple half double crochet border.

Mix and match C2C blanket panels

My coordinating C2C blanket collections use the same panel size and layout. Each blanket is assembled from six 40 × 40 panels in a 2 × 3 arrangement.

Because the panel sizes match, you can replace one dinosaur with a design from another collection or create a completely custom blanket using your favorite squares.

Choose all six panels from one theme or combine animals, vehicles, dinosaurs, and other designs.

Free C2C crochet dinosaur blanket pattern details

Skill level

Advanced beginner. You should be comfortable with basic corner-to-corner crochet, increasing, decreasing, reading color instructions, and changing yarn colors.

A beginner-friendly video tutorial is included below if you need help learning the C2C technique before starting the full blanket.

Materials needed

  • G-6 (4 mm) crochet hook
  • Worsted weight yarn #4 (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, white)
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Locking stitch markers, optional

Best yarn for a C2C dinosaur blanket

Use worsted weight yarn that produces a clear, even C2C block and meets the listed gauge.

A smooth acrylic yarn is practical for a child’s blanket because it is generally easy to wash and available in many bright colors. Use the same yarn line or similar yarns throughout the blanket whenever possible so the panels have consistent thickness and drape.

Finished size

The finished crochet dinosaur blanket measures approximately:

45 inches wide × 67 inches long
114 cm wide × 170 cm long

Your finished measurements may vary depending on yarn, hook size, tension, borders, and blocking.

Each completed dinosaur panel measures 40 × 40 C2C blocks before assembly.

Gauge

8 C2C blocks = 4 inches

Each block consists of ch 3 and 3 dc.

Gauge is important because all six panels need to finish at approximately the same size. If one panel is noticeably larger or smaller, it may be difficult to sew the blanket together evenly.

If your blocks are too large, try a smaller crochet hook.
If your blocks are too small, try a larger crochet hook.

My guide to crochet gauge explains how to measure your stitches and adjust your hook size.

Crochet abbreviations

C2C terminology

A panel is one completed 40 × 40 dinosaur design.

A C2C block is the small stitch group made from a chain 3 and three double crochet stitches.

The block totals shown at the end of each row refer to the number of C2C blocks, not individual crochet stitches.

Crochet dinosaur blanket pattern instructions

Make each of the six dinosaur panels using the graph or written instructions provided.

Before assembling the blanket, check that all six panels are approximately the same size. Block the panels if needed.

Optional border around each panel

Ch 1. Work 2 sc along the side of each C2C block.

In each corner, work (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc).

Assemble the dinosaur blanket

Arrange the six panels in a 2 × 3 layout before sewing. Check that every dinosaur is facing the correct direction.

Use locking stitch markers to hold neighboring panels together.

With a yarn needle and matching yarn, sew the panels together along their edges. Keep the seam tension even so the blanket lies flat.

Weave in the seaming ends securely.

Add the blanket border

Join your border yarn in any corner.

Round 1: Ch 2. Work 1 hdc evenly along each outer edge of the blanket.

In each corner, work (hdc, ch 2, hdc).

Join with a sl st to the first hdc. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Because the blanket edges are made from C2C blocks and panel seams, focus on spacing the border stitches evenly rather than forcing a specific stitch count.

Finishing

Weave in all loose ends.

Gently block the blanket if needed to straighten the panels, seams, and outer border.

Follow the care instructions printed on your yarn label.

Frequently asked questions

Is this C2C crochet dinosaur blanket beginner friendly?
The pattern is best for advanced beginners. You should understand basic corner-to-corner crochet, increasing, decreasing, and changing colors. The included video tutorial can help you practice the technique first.

Which dinosaurs are included in the blanket?
The pattern includes a T-rex, triceratops, stegosaurus, parasaurolophus, pterodactyl, and brontosaurus.

How many C2C panels do I need to make?
You will make six separate 40 × 40 panels and arrange them in a 2 × 3 layout.

Does the pattern include graphs and written instructions?
Yes. Each dinosaur panel includes a graph and written color instructions.

Do I have to use the same yarn colors?
No. You may use any worsted weight yarn colors you prefer. Keep the background and panel yarn weights consistent so all six squares finish at a similar size.

Can I mix these dinosaur panels with other C2C designs?
Yes. These panels are designed to match the size and layout used in my other coordinating C2C blanket collections.

Can I make the blanket larger or smaller?
Using a different yarn weight or hook size will change the panel and blanket measurements. However, all six panels must be made with the same yarn, hook, and gauge. Adding extra panels is another way to create a larger blanket.

Do I need to add a border around each panel?
The individual panel border is optional. If you add it to one panel, add it to all six so they remain consistent.

How do I keep the panels the same size?
Use the same yarn, hook, and gauge for every panel. Count the blocks carefully and block the finished squares before seaming if necessary.

Can I sell finished dinosaur blankets made from this pattern?
Yes. You may sell finished blankets you make from this pattern. Please do not copy, redistribute, or sell the written pattern or graphs. Credit to Lovable Loops as the designer is appreciated.
