Free Crochet Chick Applique Pattern

My chick applique pattern is fantastic for beginners! It’s designed to be simple and easy to follow, so if you’re just starting out with crocheting, this is the perfect project for you. 

With clear instructions and basic stitches, you’ll have fun creating a cute chick, while you practice your crochet skills. Plus, with the step-by-step video tutorial I’ve included, you’ll have extra help whenever you need it.

Materials Needed

  • Crochet Hook Size: H-8 5 mm
  • Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in yellow, orange, black, and scraps of white.
  • Yarn needle: Use this to weave in your ends.
  • Scissors: Use scissors to fasten off your yarn.
  • Stitch marker(s): Use these to help keep track of your stitches. 

Crochet Chick Applique Pattern

Skill Level

Beginner. My crochet applique patterns are designed using basic stitches in basic form. 

Finished Measurements

My chick measured 4 inches wide and 4 inches tall.

Gauge

2 rounds = 1 inch and 4 stitches = 1 inch

Supplies

  • Hook: H-8 5 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn: medium yarn weight
  • Notions: stitch markers & tapestry needle

Crochet Terms

  • dc = double crochet stitches
  • hdc = half double crochet stitches
  • sc = single crochet stitches
  • ch/chs = chain/chains
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • rnd/rnds = round/rounds
  • rem = remaining

Pattern Notes

  • The pattern starts with a magic circle (magic ring).
  • Join in the round with a slip stitch to the first stitch made in that round. 
  • Repeat instructions between asterisks (*) for the remainder of the round.
  • The pattern is written in US terms.

Instructions

Face

  • Use yellow yarn.

Round 1: Magic circle, ch 2, 11 dc, join with sl st to the top of the first dc (11 stitches)

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st, join (22 stitches)

Round 3: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next st*, join (33 stitches)

Round 4: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next 2 sts*, join (44 stitches)

Do not fasten off. Begin the hair curl.

Hair Curl

  • Use yellow yarn.

Ch 5, 3 hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each rem ch, join (9 stitches)

Eyes

  • Use black yarn.
  • You will need 2 scraps of white yarn.
  • Make 2.

Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 2, 9 hdc, join with sl st to the top of the first hdc (9 stitches)

Use scrap pieces of white yarn to add the eye sparkle.

Fasten off leaving a long tail and then sew the eyes to the face.

Beak

  • Use orange yarn.

Row 1: Ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch, turn (4 stitches)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc2tog, turn (2 stitches)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog, fasten off (1 stitch)

Sew the beak to the face. Make sure it is centered between the eyes.
