Materials for the Granny Square Crochet Pattern

  • Hook size: H-8 5 mm crochet hook or mm hook size needed for gauge
  • Type of yarn: Worsted weight yarn/medium weight #4. You will need black, red, green, and white yarn.
  • Tapestry needle: Use this to weave in the ends.
  • Stitch markers: Optional. You can use these to help keep track of your stitches.

My basic granny square measures 7.25 inches by 7.25 inches.

  • ch/chs = chain stitch/chain stitches

Granny Square Crochet Pattern Notes

  • The granny square pattern is written in US terms.
  • You will make the granny square first and then add the stitched eyeball veins.
  • The stitch counts are listed at the end of every row/round.
  • Join each round with a slip stitch to the first stitch made in that round. 
  • Repeat instructions between the asterisks (*) for the rest of the round.
  • The chain at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.

If you find the magic ring/circle tricky, try this easier method for round 1: Chain 3, make 11 dc in the 3rd ch from the hook, join (11 stitches)

Rnd 1: Magic circle, 11 DC, join to first DC with green yarn (11 stitches)

Green yarn
Rnd 2: Ch 2, make 2 DC in each st, join with white yarn (22 stitches)

White yarn
Rnd 3: Ch 2, *2 DC, DC in the next st*, join (33 stitches)

Rnd 4: Ch 2, *2 DC, DC in the next 2 sts*, join with red yarn (44 stitches)

Red yarn
Rnd 5: Ch 1, *2 SC, SC in the next 10 sts*, join with black yarn (55 stitches)

Black yarn
Rnd 6: Ch 2, *(2 DC, ch-2, 2 DC), DC in the next 11 sts*, join

Rnds 7-9: Ch 2, DC in each st and (2 DC, ch-2, 2 DC) in each ch-2 corner space 

Eyeball Veins Instructions

Use red yarn to stitch veins on the eyeball.

Eyeball Sparkle Instructions

Use white yarn to stitch “sparkle” on the pupil.
