Free Crochet Chick Applique Pattern
My chick applique pattern is great for beginners! I designed it to be simple and easy to follow, so if you’re just starting out with crocheting, this is the perfect project for you.

Crochet Chick Applique Pattern Information
Skill Level
Beginner. My crochet applique patterns are designed using basic stitches.
Crochet Project Materials Needed
- Crochet Hook Size: H-8 5 mm
- Yarn: worsted weight yarn in yellow, orange, black, and a bow color.
- Yarn needle: Use this to weave in your ends.
- Scissors: Use scissors to fasten off your yarn.
- Stitch marker(s): Use these to help keep track of your stitches.

Finished Size
My chicks measured 5.25 inches long and also 4.5 inches wide.
Gauge
Gauge is not important for this pattern.
Crochet Terms
- hdc = half double crochet stitches
- sc = single crochet stitches
- ch/chs = chain/chains
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- sl st = slip stitch
- rnd/rnds = round/rounds
- rem = remaining
Crochet Chick Applique Pattern Notes
- The head is worked in the round.
- The body is worked in rows.
- This pattern starts with a magic circle (magic ring).
- Repeat instructions between the asterisks (*) for the rest of the round.
- The pattern is written in US terms.
Crochet Chick Applique Pattern Instructions
- H-8 5 mm crochet hook
- yellow yarn
- 1-4 are worked in the round (head).
- 5-10 are worked in rows (body)
Head for the Crochet Chick Applique Pattern
Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 2, 8 hdc, join with sl st to the top of the first hdc (8 stitches)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in each st, join (16 stitches)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, *2 hdc, hdc in next st*, join (24 stitches)
Rnd 4: Ch 2, *2 hdc, hdc in next 2 sts*, join (32 stitches)
Body for the Crochet Chick Applique Pattern
Begin row 5 where you left off at the end of round 4.
Row 5: Ch 2, 2 hdc in 5 sts, turn (10 stitches)
Row 6: Ch 2, hdc in each st, turn (10 stitches)
Row 7: Ch 2, hdc in each st, turn (10 stitches)
Row 8: Ch 2, hdc2tog x 5, turn (5 stitches)
Row 9: Ch 2, hdc in each st, turn (5 stitches)
Row 10: Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc, hdc2tog, turn (3 stitches)
Fasten off and then weave in all of your ends.
Feet for the Crochet Chick Applique Pattern
- Use orange yarn.
You will be making the feet in the first and last stitches of row 10 of the chicken body.
Join your yarn. Ch 2, make a hdc and then repeat for the other foot. Fasten off and then weave in your ends.
Wings for the Crochet Chick Applique Pattern
- Use yellow yarn.
- For both wings to face the correct way, you will need to make one wing with the right side of your work facing you and make the other wing with the wrong side of your work facing you.
On the right side of your work, join your yarn to the second row of the chicken body.
Row 1: Ch 6, sc in the 2nd ch from hook, and in the rem chs work: hdc, hdc, dc, dc, join to the first row of the chicken body.
Repeat with the other side of your work facing you. Fasten off and then weave in your ends.
Eyes & Beak
Sew eyes with black yarn and also a beak with orange yarn onto the head.
Hair Curl
- Use yellow yarn.
Join your yarn to the centermost stitch at the top of the head.
Row 1: Ch 4, 3 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each rem ch, join to the same st, (9 stitches)
Bow
- Use a yarn color of your choosing.
Ch 4, in the 4th ch from the hook work: dc, dc, ch 3, join the ch 3 with a sl st, repeat to make the other half of the bow.
Fasten off leaving a long yarn tail and then wrap the tail around the center of the bow.
Sew the bow to your applique either as a bow tie or as a hair bow.
Finishing the Crochet Chick Applique Pattern
Fasten off and then weave in all of your ends.
