Crochet abbreviations

  • dc = double crochet
  • FPdc = front post double crochet
  • BPdc = back post double crochet

Changing colors in double crochet

To change colors in double crochet, begin the last dc in the current color as usual. Yarn over, insert your hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, then yarn over and pull through two loops. Before completing the stitch, drop the current color and yarn over with the new color. Pull the new color through the final two loops to complete the dc.

Carry the unused yarn loosely along the inside of the hat and crochet over it until you need that color again.

After completing the final brim round, fasten off and weave in all yarn ends. Trim any loose threads and gently shape the hat by hand.

Adding a pom pom

The hats shown in this pattern are finished with faux fur pom poms, but you can also make a yarn pom pom if you prefer.

For a faux fur pom pom: Secure the pom pom to the top of the hat using the attached ties or a yarn needle, depending on the style of pom pom you are using.

For a yarn pom pom:

  1. Wrap yarn evenly around your pom pom maker.
  2. Cut the yarn along the grooves and tie a strong piece of yarn tightly around the center.
  3. Fluff and trim the pom pom to your desired size.
  4. Thread the long yarn ends onto a yarn needle and sew the pom pom securely to the top of the hat.
