Here’s a quick overview of the materials, sizing, gauge, and pattern notes before you begin.

Skill level

Advanced beginner. Projects may include basic crochet stitches, color work, and/or shaping.

Materials needed

Crochet hook size: H-8 5 mm crochet hook or size needed for gauge
Yarn: Worsted weight yarn #4 in white, blue, green, and orange. I used acrylic yarn.
Yarn needle: Use this to weave in your ends.
Scissors: Use scissors to fasten off your yarn.
Stitch marker(s): Optional. Use these to help keep track of your stitches.

Finished size

Placemat measures 18.5 inches wide and 12.5 inches long.
Coaster measures 5 inches wide and 4.5 inches long.

Gauge

8 stitches = 2 inches
7 rows = 2 inches

The size of your placemat may be larger or smaller if your gauge is different from mine.

Crochet abbreviations

sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
ch/chs = chain/chains
st/sts = stitch/stitches
sl st = slip stitch

Pattern notes

When you are changing colors, use the new color to do the final pull through of the stitch that is the old color.
The easy pattern is worked in rows of half double crochet stitches from the bottom up.

The starting chains for the placemat and coaster are 72 and 18.
Chain 2 at the beginning of each row.
The letters (W, R, G, B) and numbers show how many half double crochets (hdc) to make in each color. For example, “W34, G7, W29” means 34 white hdc, 7 green hdc, and 29 white hdc.
