Fall Placemat & Coaster Set

Fall Placemat & Coaster Set

SEPTEMBER 23, 2020

Happy Fall Y'all!  When I set out to design this pattern, I intended for it to be a throw pillow cover. After making it in single crochet (scroll down for pic) I decided that it was too small and redid it using half double crochet. I think it looks much better. I was also happy to find out that it ended up being the perfect size for a placemat. So, I decided to go with it and I designed a matching coaster. You could still use this pattern as a pillow cover though! Just crochet a back of the same size, sew three sides together and insert a pillow insert like this one. Sew up the final side and you're done!

Placemat measures 18.5 inches wide and 12.5 inches long.
Coaster measures 5 inches wide and 4.5 inches long.

This pattern is worked using half double crochet (hdc). You can see in the picture below what it would look like if you used single crochet instead. The smaller graph ended up measuring 17 inches wide and 7 inches long.

8 hdc= 2 inches
7 rows= 2 inches

hdc= half double crochet
sc= single crochet
ch= chain
ch(s)= chains
st= stitch
st(s)= stitches
rem= remaining

  • When you are changing colors, use the new color to do the final pull through of the stitch that is the old color.
  • Pattern is worked back and forth in rows from the bottom up.
  • You can print and follow the pixel graph or follow the written instructions.
  • Chain 2 at the beginning of each row.
  • The letters (w, o, g) and numbers tell you how many and what color of half double crochet (hdc) to make. For example: w16, g, w53  would be 16 white hdc, 1 green hdc, 53 white hdc
