Crochet Market Bag Pattern Information
Skill Level
Intermediate. The crochet bag pattern includes basic crochet stitches, involved stitch pattern, color work, and/or shaping.
Crochet Project Materials Needed
- Crochet hook size: H-8 5 mm crochet hook
- Yarn: Worsted weight cotton yarn. I used Lily Sugar N Cream in:
Seabreeze/green (2 skeins)
Ecru/tan (2 skeins)
Sunshine/yellow (1 skein)
White (1 skein) - Yarn needle/tapestry needle: Use this to weave in your ends.
- Scissors: Use scissors to fasten off your yarn.
- Stitch marker(s): Optional. Use these to help keep track of your stitches.
Finished Bag Size
The crochet market bag measures 14 inches wide and 13 inches long. The strap height is 17 inches.

Gauge is not important for this free pattern.
Crochet Terms
- hdc = half double crochet stitch
- hdc2tog = half double crochet decrease
- sc = single crochet stitches
- sc2tog = single crochet decrease

Crochet Pattern Notes
- Bag is worked in the round.
- Strap is worked in rows.
- Joins are made with a slip stitch.
- Colors changes are made when joining.
- Fasten off old color during color changes or carry the yarn up.
- Work first stitch(es) of each round in same stitch you joined to.
- The bobble stitches will pop out on the “wrong side”. Just pop them to the “right side”.
- The first star stitch of each round begins in the middle of the beginning ch 3.
- The hdc2tog at the end of the star stitch rounds will prevent you from having a hole between your last star stitch and last stitch of the round.
- The first star stitch of each round begins in the middle of the beginning ch 3.
- Repeat instructions between asterisks (*) for the rest of the round.

Use green yarn for rounds 1-6.
Round 1: Ch 52, 2 hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook, 2 hdc in next ch, hdc in each of the next 46 chs, 2 hdc in each of the last two chs, continue working in the backside of the chains: 2 hdc in each of the next two chs, hdc in each of the next 46 chs, 2 hdc in each of the last two chs, join (108 stitches)
Round 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in each of the first two sts, hdc in each of the next 50 sts, 2 hdc in each of the next four sts, hdc in each of the next 50 sts, 2 hdc in each of the last two stitches, join (116 stitches)
Round 3: Ch 2, 2 hdc in each of the first two sts, hdc in each of the next 54 sts, 2 hdc in each of the next four sts, hdc in each of the next 54 sts, 2 hdc in each of the last two stitches, join (124 stitches)

Round 4: Ch 2, hdc in each stitch, join (124 stitches)
Rounds 5 & 6: Repeat round 4.
Use tan yarn for rounds 7-9.
Rnd 7: Ch 2, *hdc, ch-1, skip a st*, join to the first ch-1 space (62 ch-1 spaces)
Rnd 8: ch 1, 2 sc in each ch-1 sp, join (124 stitches)

Use yellow yarn for rounds 10-12.
Rnd 10: ch 3, ss around (see special stitches), when you get to the last st y/o insert your hook into the same st as the last spike of the last star and pull up a lp, y/o and insert your hook into the last st of the rnd and pull up a lp, y/o and pull through all five lps (hdc2tog made), hdc in the top of the ch-3 sp, join (61 ss, 2 hdc)
Rnd 11: ch 2, 2 hdc in the eye of each star, hdc once in each of the last 2 sts, join (124 hdc)

Use white yarn for rounds 13-15.

Begin where you left off for round 37.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc 14, sc2tog, turn (16 stitches)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc 12, sc2tog, turn (14 stitches)

Rows 5-127: Repeat row 4
On the bag, skip over 44 sts and join yarn. Repeats rows 1-3 on the opposite side of the bag.
