What is corner-to-corner crochet (C2C)?

Corner to corner crochet (also called C2C) is a crochet technique that builds your work diagonally. You make small blocks (often called “squares”) in rows, starting in one corner and working toward the opposite corner. Each new row grows the project bigger until you reach the widest point, then you decrease to finish the last corner.

C2C is especially popular for baby blankets because it works up quickly, has a cozy texture, and is perfect for color changes and fun designs—like this woodland animal crochet blanket. If you’re new to C2C, don’t worry! Once you learn the basic block, the rest is mostly repeating the same steps while following the graph or written color chart.

New to C2C? Start with my video tutorial

New to C2C crochet? I recommend watching my beginner-friendly C2C video tutorial first. In the video, I show you step-by-step how to crochet a small C2C heart square, which is a great way to practice before you start the C2C baby blanket squares in this pattern.

The woodland squares are larger and include more color changes, so making one quick practice square first can make this corner to corner crochet baby blanket feel much easier. Grab the C2C heart square pattern on my blog so you can print the graph and follow along.

This tutorial teaches the basic C2C block, plus how to do C2C increases and decreases.

Finished size

Finished baby blanket size: 41 in x 54 in (104 cm x 137 cm)
Each animal square size: 13.5 in x 13.5 in (34.3 cm x 34.3 cm)
Blanket layout: 3 squares x 4 squares (12 total)

Gauge

Gauge isn’t super critical for a blanket, but it will affect your finished size. If your gauge is looser or tighter than mine, your blanket may turn out bigger or smaller.

4 squares (ch 3 + 3 dc) = 2 inches

✅ Too many stitches in 2 inches? Try a larger hook.
✅ Too few stitches in 2 inches? Try a smaller hook.

Crochet abbreviations

  • dc = double crochet
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • ch/chs = chain/chains
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch

Assembling the baby blanket

Blanket layout: 3 squares x 4 squares (12 total)

Arrange your squares right side up in a 3×4 grid. Make sure all squares are facing the same direction. Use a yarn needle and matching yarn to sew the squares together through the border stitches.

Adding a border

Join white yarn, ch 2, hdc in each stitch around the blanket. In each corner, work (hdc, ch 2, hdc).

Finishing

Weave in all of the ends. Block if desired.

Crochet woodland baby blanket pattern FAQs

Is this a free crochet baby blanket pattern?
Yes! This is a free crochet woodland baby blanket pattern on my blog, with graphs and written instructions for all 12 animal squares.

Is this a corner to corner (C2C) crochet blanket?
Yes — this is a C2C (corner to corner) crochet baby blanket made from 12 separate animal squares that you sew together.

Can I use the graphs or the written instructions?
Yes. You can follow the C2C graphs or use the written color changes for each animal (whichever is easier for you).

What skill level is this pattern?
Advanced beginner. The stitches are simple, but you’ll be doing color changes and following a graph (or written color chart).

Do I need to match gauge for a blanket?
Gauge isn’t super critical for a blanket, but it will change the finished size. If you crochet tighter, your blanket may turn out smaller; if you crochet looser, it may turn out bigger.

Can I make this blanket bigger or smaller?
Yes! You can adjust the finished size by adding a wider border, changing your hook size, or resizing the layout (for example, adding a row of squares).

What yarn works best for this woodland crochet blanket?
Worsted weight (#4) acrylic yarn works great for a soft, washable baby blanket. I used Red Heart Super Saver, but any similar worsted weight yarn should work.

Any tips for neat C2C color changes?
Yes — change colors on the last yarn-over of the last double crochet in the block, and keep yarn tails tidy as you go so you don’t end up with a huge tangle at the end.

How do I join the animal squares together?
Lay the squares right side up in a 3×4 grid, then use a yarn needle and matching yarn to sew them together through the border stitches.
