Free Crochet Frog Applique Pattern

My frog applique pattern is fantastic for beginners! It’s designed to be simple and easy to follow, so if you’re just starting out with crocheting, this is the perfect project for you. 

With clear instructions and basic stitches, you’ll have fun creating a cute frog, while you practice your crochet skills. Plus, with the step-by-step video tutorial I’ve included, you’ll have extra help whenever you need it.

Materials Needed

  • Crochet Hook Size: H-8 5 mm
  • Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in green, pink, black, and scraps of white.
  • Yarn needle: Use this to weave in your ends.
  • Scissors: Use scissors to fasten off your yarn.
  • Stitch marker(s): Use these to help keep track of your stitches. 

Crochet Frog Applique Pattern

Skill Level

Beginner. My crochet applique patterns are designed using basic stitches in basic form. 

Finished Measurements

My sloth measured 4 inches wide and 5.5 inches tall.

Gauge

2 rounds = 1 inch and 4 stitches = 1 inch

Supplies

  • Hook: H-8 5 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn: medium yarn weight
  • Notions: stitch markers & tapestry needle

Crochet Terms

  • dc = double crochet stitches
  • hdc = half double crochet stitches
  • sc = single crochet stitches
  • ch/chs = chain/chains
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • rnd/rnds = round/rounds
  • rem = remaining

Pattern Notes

  • The pattern starts with a magic circle (magic ring).
  • Join in the round with a slip stitch to the first stitch made in that round. 
  • Repeat instructions between asterisks (*) for the remainder of the round.
  • The pattern is written in US terms.

Instructions

Face

  • Use green yarn.

Round 1: Magic circle, ch 2, 11 dc, join with sl st to the top of the first dc (11 stitches)

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st, join (22 stitches)

Round 3: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next st*, join (33 stitches)

Round 4: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next 2 sts*, join (44 stitches)

Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Eyes

  • You will need black, white, and green yarn.
  • Make 2.

Start with black yarn.

Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 2, 9 hdc, join with sl st to the top of the first hdc (9 stitches)

Switch to white yarn.

Rnd 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st, join (18 stitches)

Switch to green yarn.

Rnd 3: ch 1, *2 sc, sc in next st*, join (27 stitches)

Use scrap pieces of white yarn to add the eye sparkle.

Fasten off leaving a long tail. Sew the eyes to the face.

Cheeks

  • Use pink yarn.
  • Make 2.

Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 2, 9 hdc, join with sl st to the top of the first hdc (9 stitches)

Fasten off and sew the cheeks to the face.

Smile

Use black yarn to add a smile.
