Materials needed

  • Crochet hook size H-8 (5 mm) – Or the size needed to match the gauge.
  • Worsted weight yarn (#4) – In black and white.
  • Yarn needle – For weaving in ends neatly.
  • Scissors – To cut your yarn.

Finished size

Approximately 7.25 inches (18.5 cm) square.

Easy crochet spider pattern instructions

You’ll first make the granny square base, then add the spider details.

Granny square pattern

This square is worked using the circle-to-square technique, which means you start by crocheting a round shape (a circle) and then gradually turn it into a square. You’ll increase evenly at first to form the circle, and then use corner stitches in later rounds to shape it into a square.

Black yarn

  • Rnd 1: Magic circle, 11 DC, join to first DC. (11 stitches)
  • Rnd 2: Ch 2, make 2 DC in each st, join. (22 stitches)
  • Rnd 3: Ch 2, *2 DC in next st, DC in next st*, repeat from * to * around, join. (33 stitches)
  • Rnd 4: Ch 2, *2 DC in next st, DC in next 2 sts*, repeat from * to * around, join with white yarn. (44 stitches)

White yarn

  • Rnd 5: Ch 2, *(2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC) in next st, DC in next 10 sts*, repeat from * to * around, join.
  • Rnds 6–8: Ch 2, DC in each st and (2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC) in each ch-2 corner space. Join and fasten off.

Spider eyes pattern

White yarn

  • Rnd 1: Magic circle, 8 HDC, join. (8 stitches)
  • Rnd 2: Ch 2, make 2 HDC in each st, join. (16 stitches)

Tie a small knot of black yarn for each pupil and attach it to the center of the eyes. Sew the eyes to the spider’s head.

Spider legs pattern

Black yarn — make 8 legs

Ch 12, SC in 2nd ch from hook and in next 4 chs, (SC, ch 1, SC) in next ch, SC in next 5 chs, fasten off.
Sew the legs securely to the granny square.

Spider smile & web details

Using black yarn, stitch a small smile and a hanging web line onto the granny square.

Finishing
