hdc Light Weight Beanie

hdc Light Weight Beanie

FEBRUARY 15, 2021

I recently designed a Light Weight Beanie that is made using double crochet (dc) stitches. I love how it turned out. I decided to make another version using light weight yarn but with half double crochet (hdc) stitches. I hope you like it!

I also have hats using larger weight yarn: worsted weight, bulky weight and super bulky.

Please, check your gauge before you begin. You may need to use a hook smaller or larger to achieve the gauge. This is a very important step. If you don't check your gauge, you may end up with a hat that is too large/small.

This is the hat size guide that I use to design my hats. This guide was made by Jeanne Steinhilber for The Crochet Crowd. You can read the original post here.

hdc= half double crochet
sc= single crochet
ch= chain
ch(s)= chains
st= stitch
st(s)= stitches
rem= remaining
rnd=round
rnd(s)= rounds

  • you are crocheting in the round
  • hat is worked from the top down
  • the ch at the beginning of each round never counts as your first stitch
  • Some of my sizes have a hat height that is shorter than the size chart recommends. I felt that some of the hats ended up being too tall. I based my opinion on my experience measuring hats for myself, my kids and my Etsy Shop customers.
  • you can make any size hat longer or shorter by repeating or eliminating the last row.
  • I chose to separate the yarn colors and alternate colors every two rounds.
  • Pom Pom instructions are at the end of this post.

Use your large Pom Pom maker.

Firmly and evenly wind your yarn around each set of arches. After the first set of arches, close them and then wind your yarn around the second set. timeless slouch boho love beanie hat free crochet pattern

Cut the yarn between each set of arches.timeless slouch boho love beanie hat free crochet pattern

Use your scrap piece of yarn to tie the pom pom. I recommend you double/triple knot it.

Carefully open the arches.timeless slouch boho love beanie hat free crochet pattern

Use a hot melt adhesive to place a dab of glue in the center of the pom pom. This will help prevent it from unraveling.timeless slouch boho love beanie hat free crochet pattern

Use a tapestry needle to attach your pom pom to the top of your hat.
