Looking for a quick and easy crochet project that’s perfect for beginners? My free Bulky Yarn Hat pattern is just what you need!
This easy hat pattern works up very quickly and uses only basic crochet stitches, making it the perfect crochet project for crochet beginners. Plus, since it’s written for baby, child, and adult sizes, this pattern is perfect for making hats for the whole family.
So grab your hook and some bulky yarn, and let’s whip up some hats!
Skill Level
Beginner. Basic stitches in basic form. Simple repeats in rounds.
Materials
- L/8 mm Crochet Hook
- Bulky Weight Yarn (#5) (I used Premier Chunky Tweed yarn in Aran)
- Large Pom Pom Maker
- Hot Melt Adhesive
- Yarn for Pom Pom (I used Royal for adult hat, Cherry Red for child hat, Gold for baby hat and Minty for preemie hat)
Gauge
Gauge is very important for this pattern.
10 dc= 4 inches
6 rows= 4 inches
To check your gauge, make a gauge swatch by crocheting the first three rounds of the baby size hat. Your swatch should measure 4.5 inches across the middle.
If your swatch is larger than 4.5 inches, your gauge is looser than mine. Try using a smaller crochet hook.
If your swatch is smaller than 4.5 inches, your gauge is tighter than mine. Try using a larger crochet hook.
Bulky Yarn Hat Size Chart

Pattern Notes
- This pattern starts with a magic circle (also known as a magic ring or adjustable ring). If you are a beginner crocheter, check out my magic circle tutorial.
- Leave a long yarn tail for weaving in when you make your magic circle.
- The beginning of each round starts with a chain. This chain does not count as your first stitch.
- At the end of each round, you’ll join your yarn with a slip stitch (sl st) to the first stitch made in that round.
- Repeat instructions between asterisks (*) for the remainder of the round.
- You are crocheting in the round.
- Hat is worked from the top down.
- You can make any size hat longer or shorter by repeating or eliminating the second to last row.

Crochet Stitches & Techniques
Chain (ch)
- Start by making a slip knot on your crochet hook.
- Hold the hook in your right hand (or left hand, if you’re left-handed) and the yarn in your left hand. With the hook, catch the yarn and pull it through the loop on the hook. This creates one chain stitch.
- Continue making chain stitches by repeating step 2.
Slip Stitch (sl st)
- Insert hook into next stitch.
- Yarn over and pull the yarn through the stitch and through the loop on your hook.
Double Crochet (dc)
- Yarn over & insert hook in next stitch.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop. You will have 3 loops on your hook.
- Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. You will have 2 loops on your hook.
- Yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops on your hook.
Single Crochet (sc)
- Insert hook in next stitch.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop. You will have 2 loops on your hook.
- Yarn over and pull through both loops.

Pom Pom
Photos are from my LOVE Beanie.
Use your large pom pom maker.
I used Royal for my adult hat, Cherry Red for my child hat, Gold for my baby hat and Minty for my preemie hat.
Firmly and evenly wind your yarn around each set of arches. After the first set of arches, close them and then wind your yarn around the second set.

Cut the yarn between each set of arches.

Use your scrap piece of yarn to tie the pom pom. I recommend you double/triple knot it.
Carefully open the arches.

Use a hot melt adhesive to place a dab of glue in the center of the pom pom. This will help prevent it from unraveling.

Fluff your pom pom and trim any long ends.
Use a tapestry needle to attach your pom pom to the top of your hat.
