Free Baby Hat Crochet Pattern

Crochet Project Materials Needed

  • Crochet hook size: J-10 6 mm
  • Yarn: Bulky weight yarn #6
  • Yarn needle: Use this to weave in your ends.
  • Scissors: Use scissors to fasten off your yarn.
  • Tape measure: Use a measuring tape to find your baby’s head circumference. 
  • Stitch marker(s): These help keep track of your stitches. 
  • Large pom pom maker: For making a pom pom for your hat. 

Baby Hat Crochet Pattern Information

Skill Level

Beginner. This baby hat crochet pattern uses basic stitches in basic form and also in simple repeats in rounds.

Finished Size

0-3 months. It will fit a baby with a head circumference of up to 14 inches. The height of the hat measures 5 inches. 

Gauge

4 rounds = 4 inches in diameter

Crochet Terms

  • dc = double crochet
  • sc = single crochet
  • ch/chs = chain/chains
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch

Pattern Notes

  • The hat is worked in the round and from the top down. 
  • Join each round with a slip stitch to the first stitch made in that round. 
  • Repeat instructions between the asterisks (*) for the rest of the round.
  • The chain at the beginning of each round does not count as your first stitch. 
  • The pattern is written in US terms.

Magic Circle Alternative

If you’re not comfortable with using a magic circle, you can use an alternative method to make round 1 of the beanie. This method is just as effective and might be easier for beginners.

Round 1: Chain 4, make 11 dc in the 4th ch from the hook, join (11 stitches)

Baby Hat Crochet Pattern Instructions

Rnd 1: Magic ring, 11 dc, join with sl st (11)

Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st, join (22)

Rnd 3: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next st *, join (33)

Rnd 4: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next 2 sts*, join (44)

Rnd 5: Ch 2, dc in each st, join (44) 

Rnds 6-12: repeat row 5 (44)

Rnd 13: Ch 1, sc in each st, join (44)

Add a Pom Pom to the Baby Hat Crochet Pattern

  1. Wind the yarn around both arches. 
  2. Cut the yarn along the middle gap.
  3. Tie with a piece of scrap yarn. 
  4. Open the arches and remove the pom pom.
  5. Trim any loose ends.

Attach the pom pom to the top of your hat.

Fasten off and then weave in your ends.
