free-lion-hat-crochet-pattern

My lion hat crochet pattern is so fun to make. Of course, you’ve probably noticed that I love designing all different types of animal crochet hats. However, I especially love the ones where I can use yarn fringe for details, and the lion’s mane is perfect for this. This free crochet hat pattern is available in multiple sizes for newborn through adult so you can use it over and over again to make fun gifts for just about everyone you know.

Changing Hat Design

One of my favorite things about crocheting is that you can always change things up. It’s an easy craft and you can do a lot with just a few basic stitches. However, you can also constantly tweak things to make them even better. Therefore, just because I’ve made other animal hats doesn’t mean that the lion hat crochet pattern has to be built the same way.

You see, I recently decided to revisit my basic crochet beanie hat pattern.  After designing my Candy Corn and Scarecrow hats using an I 5.5mm crochet hook, I found that I really liked the size and closeness of the stitches. Therefore, I will be transitioning all of my hat and wig patterns over to my new Basic Beanie pattern. My animal crochet hats like this one are built by adding details to that basic design. I’m happy with how this has turned out.

Nose

Nose is worked the same for all sizes. It will scale a little larger on the 0/3-6/12m hats. I think it looks cute but if you want the nose to be smaller, you can work the same steps using a smaller hook.

Medium brown yarn, H 5mm hook

Magic loop, ch 2, 4 dc, 2 tc, ch 4, sl st, ch 3, 2 tc, 4 dc, join to top of first dc, fasten off and leave long tail

Mane

Colors: soft gold (this is the same as the hat), light brown, medium brown, gold

Cut yarn in to 6” strips

Assembly

Use the pictures below as a reference.

Ears: Sew  onto hat using the yarn tail and a tapestry needle. You are sewing the wider end onto the hat. Attach each ear about 3 rows down from the center on each side of the hat.

Face: Sew onto hat using yarn tail and a tapestry needle. Sew it one row above the hat’s brim. Make sure it is centered between the ears.

Nose: Sew onto hat after you have sewed on the face. Position the nose so that the top third of it is above the face.

Mane: Attach to hat by looping the yarn groups (4 strands) around the sts on the hat. I did one row in front of the ears/down the sides and one row behind the ears/down the sides.

Mouth & whiskers: Using a tapestry needle, sew extra yarn onto the hat to form a mouth, whiskers and to outline the bottom of the nose.
