Earflap instructions

Begin the first earflap where you ended the final round of the hat. After completing the first earflap, fasten off and use the front and back stitch counts listed for your size to position the second earflap. Work the second earflap using the same instructions.

After both earflaps are complete, join yarn and sc evenly around the entire hat and both earflaps. Join with a sl st to the first sc and fasten off.

0-3 months size earflaps

Leave 16 stitches in the front of the hat and 12 stitches in the back.

Adding the braids

Make 2 braids, one for each earflap. For each braid, cut twelve 30-inch (76 cm) strands of yarn.

  1. Fold the strands in half and pass the folded loop through the bottom of the ear flap.
  2. Pass the strand ends through the loop and pull tight to form a knot.
  3. Divide into three sections and braid.

Llama snout

Rnd 1: Magic circle, 9 dc, join (9 stitches)
Rnd 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st, join (18 stitches)

For the 0–3, 3–6, and 6–12 month sizes, stop after Round 2 and fasten off.
For Toddler, Child, and Adult sizes, continue to Round 3.

Rnd 3: ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next st*, join (27 stitches)

Fasten off and sew the snout to the hat. Use black yarn to stitch a nose and smile on the snout.

Llama ears

Make 2. Rows 1-6 are the same for all sizes.

Use a stitch marker to mark the side where you are increasing—this will be the outer side of the ear.

Row 1: ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in last 2 chs, turn (3 stitches)
Row 2: ch 1, sc in each st, turn (3 stitches)
