free unicorn tail crochet pattern

This unicorn tail would be perfect as part of a Halloween costume or for playing dress up. It is quick and super easy to make. The pattern for the waist can be adjusted to fit any waist size and I show you two different ways to make the actual yarn tail (straight or spiral). I hope you like my pattern!

Materials

– I 5.5 mm crochet hook (I love these Clover hooks!)

K 6.5 mm crochet hook

Super bulky weight (#6) yarn in white

-Worsted weight (#4) yarn in light pinklight purplebluegreen & yellow

Fits up to 21.5 inch waist circumference

Fits up to 22.5 inch waist circumference

Gauge

10 dc stitches= 4 inches & 4 rows dc= just under 2.5 inches

Notes

-You are crocheting in the round, top down.

-The ch 2 at the beginning of each round does not count as a dc.

Pattern

K 6.5 mm crochet hook and super bulky weight (#6) yarn in white

Round 1

If you don’t know how to make a chainless foundation, you can follow my YouTube tutorial where I show you how to do this, or, you can simply chain the same amount as instructed for the size you need, join your chain in the round, ch 2 and dc once in each chain.

Child Small: Chainless foundation 54 dc, join in the round

Child Medium: Chainless foundation 56 dc, join in the round

Child Large: Chainless foundation 59 dc, join in the round

Youth Small: Chainless foundation 63 dc, join in the round

Youth Medium | Woman Small: Chainless foundation 66 dc, join in the round

Youth Large: Chainless foundation 69 dc, join in the round

Woman Medium | Man Small: Chainless foundation 75 dc, join in the round

Woman Large | Man Medium: Chainless foundation 85 dc, join in the round

Man Large: Chainless foundation 95 dc, join in the round

Custom: waist measurement in inches multiplied by 2.5 = number of chainless foundation dc, join in the round

Rounds 2-4

All Sizes: ch 2, dc in each st, join (finish off and weave in ends after round 4)

Straight Tail

Cut six 30 inch long strands of each color yarn.

Fold yarn in half and lay on table.

Lay a scrap piece of thick white yarn over the folded area.

Bring your yarn ends OVER the white yarn and through the folded area.

Pull yarn ends tight until the knot looks neat and tidy.

Use tapestry needles to attach to the back of the waist band.

Tie off and weave in your ends on the inside of the waistband.

Trim ends to make them even.

Spiral Tail

 I 5.5 mm crochet hook  and yarn in light pinklight purplebluegreen & yellow

Make one in each color:

Chain 60, dc in 3rd ch from the hook, 2 dc in each rem, ch, finish off.

Tie yarn ends together.

Use a tapestry needle to attach each spiral to the back of the waist band.

Tie off and weave in your ends on the inside of the waistband.
