Free Crochet Tote Bag Pattern

Materials Needed

  • Crochet Hook Size: J-10 6 mm
  • Yarn: Chunky Bulky weight yarn (#5). I used Bernat Maker Outdoor Stripes yarn. You can also use two strands of worsted weight yarn held together.
  • Yarn needle: Use this to weave in your ends.
  • Scissors: Use scissors to fasten off your yarn.
  • Stitch marker(s): Use these to help keep track of your stitches.

Crochet Tote Bag Pattern

My crochet tote bag measures 17.5 inches wide and 12 inches tall.

Gauge

14 stitches and 11 rows = 4 inches

Crochet Terms

  • ch/chs = chain/chains
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • sc = single crochet
  • rnd/rnds = round/rounds
  • rem = remaining
  • blo = back loop only

Pattern Notes

  • Work the straps separately and then sew to the bag.
  • The tote bag is worked in the round from the bottom up.
  • The chain at the beginning of each round does not count as your first stitch. 
  • Join each round with a slip stitch to the first stitch made in that round. 
  • The pattern is written in US terms.

Rnd 1: Ch 42, 2 hdc in 3rd ch from the hook, 2 hdc in next ch, hdc in next 36 chs, 2 hdc in last 2 chs, continue working on backside of chs, 2 hdc in next two chs, hdc in next 36 chs, 2 hdc in each of the last two chs, join (88 stitches)

Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in first two sts, hdc in next 40 sts, 2 hdc in next 4 sts, hdc in next 40 sts, 2 hdc in last two sts, join (96 stitches)

Rnd 3: Ch 2, 2 hdc in first two sts, hdc in next 44 sts, 2 hdc in next 4 sts, hdc in next 44 sts, 2 hdc in last two sts, join (104 stitches)

Rnd 4: Ch 2, 2 hdc in first two sts, hdc in next 48 sts, 2 hdc in next 4 sts, hdc in next 48 sts, 2 hdc in last two sts, join (112 stitches)

Rnds 6-30: Ch 2, hdc in each st, join (112 stitches)

Rnd 31: Ch 1, sc in each st, join (112 stitches)

Bag Straps for the Crochet Tote Bag

Make 2.

Row 1: Ch 7, hdc in 3rd ch from the hook, hdc in rem 4 chs, turn (5 stitches)

Rows 2-46: Ch 2, hdc in each st, turn (5 stitches)

Each strap should measure approximately 18 inches.

Crochet Tote Bag Assembly

  • Measure in 1 inch from strap end and mark with a stitch marker.
  • Fold each strap in half lengthwise. Single crochet the two ends together. Leave the 1 inch section unworked.
  • Measure 4.5 inches in on each side of the front and back of the bag and mark with stitch markers. These are the spots where you will attach the straps.
  • Use a tapestry needle to sew the straps to the bag from the inside.

Finishing your Crochet Tote Bag Pattern

Fasten off and weave in your ends.
