Materials for the Scarecrow Granny Square Crochet Pattern

  • Hook size: H-8 5 mm crochet hook or mm hook size needed for gauge
  • Type of yarn weight: Worsted weight yarn/medium weight yarn #4. You will need brown, tan, yellow, orange, green, dark brown, black, and white yarn.
  • Tapestry needle/yarn needle: Use this to weave in the ends.
  • Stitch marker(s): Optional. You can use these to help keep track of your stitches.

My basic granny square measures 7.25 inches by 7.25 inches.

Gauge

16 stitches = 4 inches
9 rounds = 4 inches

  • DC = double crochet
  • SC = single crochet
  • sc2tog = single crochet decrease
  • sc3tog = single crochet 3 stitches together
  • HDC = half double crochet
  • ch/chs = chain stitch/chain stitches
  • st/sts = stitch, stitches
  • SL ST = slip stitch
  • flo = front loops only
  • blo = back loops only

Scarecrow Granny Square Crochet Pattern Notes

  • The granny square pattern is written in US terms.
  • You will make the granny square first and then add the scarecrow parts.
  • The stitch counts are listed at the end of every row/round.
  • The granny square is made with the circle to square technique.
  • Join each round with a slip stitch to the first stitch made in that round. 
  • Repeat instructions between the asterisks (*) for the rest of the round.
  • The chain at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch. 

Magic Circle Alternative

If you find the magic ring/circle tricky, try this easier method for round 1: Chain 3, make 11 dc in the 3rd ch from the hook, join (11 stitches)

You will make the granny square first and then add the scarecrow parts. 

Granny Square Crochet Pattern

Tan yarn

Rnd 1: Magic circle, 11 DC, join to first DC (11 stitches)

Rnd 2: Ch 2, make 2 DC in each st, join (22 stitches)

Rnd 3: Ch 2, *2 DC, DC in the next stitch*, join (33 stitches)

Rnd 4: Ch 2, *2 DC, DC in the next 2 sts*, join with white yarn (44 stitches)

White yarn

Rnd 5: Ch 2, *(2 DC, ch-2, 2 DC), DC in the next 10 sts*, join

Rnds 6-8: Ch 2, DC in each st and (2 DC, ch-2, 2 DC) in each ch-2 corner space 

Hat Pattern

Brown yarn

Row 1: Ch 17, SC in the 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch, fasten off (16 stitches)

Skip 3 sts and join yarn to the 4th st

Row 2: Ch 1, SC in next 10 sts, turn (10 stitches)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog, SC in next 6 sts, sc2tog, turn (8 stitches)

Row 4: Ch 1, sc2tog, SC in next 4 sts, sc2tog, turn (6 stitches)

Row 5: Ch 1, sc2tog, SC in next 2 sts, sc2tog, turn (4 stitches)

Row 6: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc2tog, fasten off (2 stitches)

Sew the hat to the scarecrow.

Eyes Pattern

​Make 2 using black yarn.

Ch 2, make 6 SC in the 2nd ch from hook, fasten off

Sew the eyes to the scarecrow.

Nose Pattern

Orange yarn

Row 1: Ch 4, SC in the 2nd ch from hook and in each rem ch, turn (3 stitches)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc3tog, continue to SC around the nose, join and fasten off

Sew the nose to the scarecrow.

Hair Instructions

Use yellow yarn to stitch straw hair sticking straight out from the bottom of the hat.

Mouth Instructions

Use dark brown yarn to stitch a mouth on the scarecrow. 

Sprig Instructions

Use green yarn to stitch a small sprig to the corner of the scarecrow hat.

Finishing the Scarecrow Granny Square Crochet Pattern

Fasten off and then weave in the ends. Block if desired.
