This is a tapestry crochet pattern
This horse head square is a beginner tapestry crochet pattern. Tapestry crochet is a crochet technique where you use multiple colors of yarn to create patterns and designs in your projects.
With tapestry crochet, you make color changes following a picture graph (also known as a “grid” or “pixel chart”) or the written instructions.
Tapestry crochet allows for intricate patterns and color work, like this free horse crochet pattern.
This square crochet pattern is perfect for beginners!
If you’re new to tapestry crochet, this crochet horse pattern is a fantastic starting point. Why? Because it only uses two colors, making it the perfect project for beginners.

- Read the graph from right to left ← on odd-numbered rows and left to right → on even-numbered rows.

What are alpha crochet patterns?
Alpha patterns are pixel drawing designs used primarily in tapestry crochet and C2C (corner to corner) crochet techniques to create letters, numbers, or easy pixel art ideas.
These patterns allow crafters to spell out names, messages, or create detailed images and motifs using a pixel grid approach.
Each square on the grid corresponds to a stitch in crochet. These patterns are also commonly referred to as “pixel crochet charts”, “grid crochet patterns”, or “crochet graph patterns”.
Pixel art in crochet design
When I design my tapestry crochet patterns, like this horse square crochet pattern, and my corner to corner crochet patterns, I create pixel charts. These charts are also known as “graphs”, “alpha patterns”, and “grids”.
You can use these pixel crochet patterns not just for crochet but also for knitting, cross-stitch, needlepoint, weaving, tapestry, beadwork, and even pixel art- just like this horse pixel art crochet pattern.
