  • ch(s): chain(s)
  • st(s): stitch(es)

  • sc: single crochet stitch

Pattern notes

  • Make color changes indicated by the graph or the written instructions.
  • The bag is made in rows of single crochet stitches.
  • Each square on the graph represents a single crochet stitch.
  • The color of the square indicates the color of yarn you should use for that stitch.
  • Read the graph from right to left ← on odd-numbered rows and left to right → on even-numbered rows.
  • ← you are working on the “right side” on odd-numbered rows.
  • → you are working on the “wrong” side” on even-numbered rows.
  • Carry the unused yarn color.

Color changes

  • To change colors, work the last yarn over of a stitch with the new color. This sets up your yarn for the next stitch in the new color.
  • Carry unused colors across the row by laying them over the stitches you’re working into, so you can pick them up as needed. This is known as tapestry crochet!

2. Make the back of the crochet heart bag

I made the back of my bag using white yarn.

Row 1: Ch 61, sc into the 2nd ch from the hook and in each rem ch, turn (60 stitches)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st, turn (60 stitches)

Rows 3- 60: Repeat row 2 until the back of the bag is the same height as the front.

Fasten off and then weave in the yarn tails.

3. Sew the front & back of the bag together

Lay the front and back of the bag with the “right” sides facing out. Make sure the heart is not upside down. Sew three of the sides together, leaving the top of the bag open.

4. Add the crochet heart bag strap

Start the strap by working into the 8 center stitches on one side of the bag. Crochet the strap in rows, then attach it to the 8 center stitches on the opposite side. The strap will stretch.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in 8 stitches, turn (8 stitches)

Rows 2-130: Ch 1, sc in each st, turn (8 stitches)

Fasten off and sew to the 6 center stitches on the opposite side.

Finishing the crochet heart bag

Weave in all of the yarn tails.

What are alpha crochet patterns?

Alpha patterns are pixel drawing designs used primarily in tapestry crochet and C2C (corner to corner) crochet techniques to create letters, numbers, or easy pixel art ideas.

These patterns allow crafters to spell out names, messages, or create detailed images and motifs using a pixel grid approach. Each square on the grid corresponds to a stitch in crochet. These patterns are also commonly referred to as “pixel crochet charts”, “grid crochet patterns”, or “crochet graph patterns”.

Pixel art in crochet design

When I design tapestry crochet patterns, like this heart square crochet pattern, and corner to corner crochet patterns, I create pixel charts. These charts are super helpful and are also known as “graphs”, “alpha patterns”, and “grids”.

What’s cool is that you can use these pixel crochet pdf pattern free downloads not just for crochet but also for knitting, cross-stitch, needlepoint, weaving, tapestry, beadwork, and even pixel art like this heart pixel art crochet pattern.
