Crochet hooded pocket shawl pattern

Wrap up in a cozy hooded pocket shawl that’s perfect for chilly days, relaxing at home, or layering over your favorite winter clothes. The long wrap, hood, and pockets make it practical as well as comfortable, with a simple handmade look that’s easy to wear.

Quick answer

This advanced beginner crochet hooded pocket shawl is made with worsted weight (#4) yarn. The one-size adult shawl is worked flat with a J-10 (6 mm) crochet hook and measures approximately 15 × 70 inches (38 × 178 cm). The hood is crocheted directly onto the center of the shawl and seamed at the top, while two pockets are made separately with an H-8 (5 mm) hook and sewn to the ends.

Crochet hooded pocket shawl pattern instructions

Shawl

Use a J-10 (6 mm) crochet hook.

Row 1: Ch 220, dc in the third ch from the hook and in each of the remaining ch, turn (218 stitches)
Rows 2–33: Ch 2, dc in each stitch, turn (218 stitches)
Row 34: Ch 2, dc in each stitch, fasten off (218 stitches)

Adding the pockets

Make 2 using an H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook.

Row 1: Ch 50, hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and in each remaining ch. Turn. (48 stitches)
Rows 2–29: Ch 2, hdc in each st across. Turn. (48 stitches)
Row 30: Ch 2, hdc in each st across. Fasten off. (48 stitches)

Lay the shawl flat and use stitch markers to mark the fourth row in from each long edge. Align the bottom of each pocket with the end of the shawl and center each pocket between the stitch markers. Use a yarn needle and matching yarn to sew the pockets in place, leaving the top edge open.

Adding the hood

Use a J-10 (6 mm) crochet hook.

Because the shawl has an even number of stitches, use the 109th stitch as the center stitch for the hood and mark it with a stitch marker. Count 38 stitches to the left and 38 stitches to the right of the marked center stitch, and place a stitch marker in each of those stitches.

Join your yarn in the stitch immediately inside one of the outside stitch markers, one stitch closer to the center. You will work across toward the opposite side.

Row 1: ch 2, dc in 36 sts, 2 dc in the next st, dc in the middle st (always replace the middle stitch marker), 2 dc in the next st, dc in the remaining 36 sts, turn (77 stitches)
