Campfire baby hat crochet pattern

I’m excited to share the Cozy Campfire Baby Hat Crochet Pattern with you! This adorable baby hat is designed to keep your little one warm and snug, just like sitting by a campfire. It’s available in 4 sizes—preemie, 0-3 months, 3-6 months, and 6-12 months—and uses medium worsted weight yarn.

Baby Hat Crochet Pattern Information

Here’s a quick overview of the materials, sizing, gauge, and pattern notes before you begin.

Skill level

Beginner. This free crochet hat pattern uses basic crochet stitches worked in the round.

Avoid frustration by learning the most common crochet mistakes beginners make and how to fix them.

Materials needed

  • Hook size: H-8 5 mm hook or size needed for gauge
  • Yarn: worsted weight yarn #4
  • Tapestry needle/yarn needle: Use this to weave in your ends.
  • Stitch markers: Use these to help keep track of your stitches.
  • Tape measure: Use this to measure your baby’s head.
  • Pom maker: Use this to make a pom pom for your hat.
  • Faux fur yarn pom pom: I used a premade fluffy yarn pom pom ball for my hat.

Gauge

16 stitches and 10 rows = 4 inches

If you have more than 16 stitches in 4 inches, try using a larger mm crochet hook. If you have less stitches, then try a smaller crochet hook.

Learn how to check crochet gauge before you begin so you can adjust your hook size if needed.

Crochet abbreviations

  • dc = double crochet stitch
  • sc = single crochet stitch
  • FPdc = front post double crochet
  • BPdc = back post double crochet
  • ch/chs = chain/chains
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • rnd/rnds = round/rounds
  • rem = remaining

Pattern notes

  • The hat is worked in the round from the top of the hat down.
  • Join each round with a slip stitch to the first stitch made in that round.
  • Repeat instructions between the asterisks (*) for the rest of the round.
  • The chain at the beginning of each round does not count as your first dc stitch.
  • The 2 rounds of FPdc and BPdc stitches create the ribbed brim.
  • The pattern is written in US terms.

Special stitches

Post stitches are made by working around the post (vertical part) of the stitch instead of into the top loops.

Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc): Make a double crochet by inserting your hook from front to back around the post of the stitch.

Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc): Make a double crochet by inserting your hook from back to front around the post of the stitch.

Magic circle alternative

If you find the magic circle (magic ring) tricky, try this easier method for round 1: Chain 4, make 11 dc in the 4th ch from the hook, join (11 stitches)

Add a Pom Pom to the Baby Hat Crochet Pattern

Follow these instructions for making a pom pom for your hat.

  1. Wind the yarn around both arches.
  2. Cut the yarn along the middle gap.
  3. Tie with a piece of scrap yarn.
  4. Open the arches and remove the pom pom.
  5. Trim any loose ends.

Attach the yarn pom pom (or faux fur pom like mine) to the top of the hat.

Finishing the Baby Hat Crochet Pattern

Fasten off and then weave in the ends. I added these faux leather handmade tags to each finished hat.
