Materials Needed
- Crochet Hook Size: J-10 6 mm hook or size needed to obtain gauge
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (#4). I used Lion Brand Yarns Wool Ease. You can make more than one crocheted headband with one skein of yarn.
- Yarn needle: Use this to weave in your ends.
- Scissors: Use scissors to fasten off your yarn.
- Stitch markers: Use these to help keep track of your stitch.
- Tape measure: Use a measuring tape to find your head circumference.
Use your Yarn Stash
Crochet headbands are the perfect project for using your yarn stash as they don’t use very much yarn. Choose a solid color or mix different colors together to make your headband unique. It’s a fun and creative way to use up a ball of yarn.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the best stitch for a headband?
The half double crochet stitch works great for a crochet headband because it gives a nice balance of height and thickness. It makes a strong fabric that keeps its shape nicely, yet feels soft and comfy to wear. Plus, it’s easy to twist and adds a pretty texture, making the headband look really cool.
How long does it take to crochet a headband?
If you have an easy pattern that uses simple stitches, you can make headband in under an hour. It also depends on how fast you crochet and how thick the yarn is.
How wide to make a crochet headband?
For a crochet headband, aim for a width of about 3 inches for toddler sizes, 4 inches for child sizes, and 5 inches for adult sizes.
Are there crochet headband patterns for different seasons?
Yes, crochet headband patterns can be adapted for different seasons. For a summer crochet headband, lightweight and lacy designs using breathable cotton yarn are popular. In colder seasons, opt for thicker yarns and cozy stitch patterns.
