Free Crochet Horse Hat Pattern
This pattern is great for beginners. It’s a fantastic way to practice your crochet skills while creating something super cute and unique.
Crochet Project Materials Needed
- Crochet Hook Sizes:
I-9 5.5 mm crochet hook (hat)
H-8 5 mm crochet hook (face parts) - Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in tan, brown, pink, black, and white

Beginner. This crochet hat pattern uses basic stitches in basic form and in simple repeats in rounds.

Crochet Pattern Notes
- Repeat the instructions between the asterisks (*) for the rest of the round.
- Rounds 1-5 of the hat are the same for all sizes.

Magic Circle Alternative
If you find the magic circle tricky, try this easier method for round 1: Chain 4, make 11 dc in the 4th ch from the hook, join (11 stitches)

Face Parts for the Crochet Horse Hat Pattern
The patterns are the same for all sizes unless stated otherwise.
Horse Snout Pattern
- H-8 5 mm crochet hook
- brown yarn
Rnd 1: Ch 8, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in next 4 chs, 4 hdc in last ch, you will finish the round by working in the backside of the chs, hdc in 5 chs, join (14 stitches)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 hdc in first 2 sts, hdc 3, 2 hdc in next 4 sts, hdc 3, 2 hdc in last 2 sts, join (22 stitches)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, 2 hdc in first 3 sts, hdc 5, 2 hdc in next 6 sts, hdc 5, 2 hdc in last 3 sts, join (34 stitches)
Stop here for the baby size. Continue to round 4 for the toddler, child, and adult sizes.
Rnd 4: Ch 2, 2 hdc in first 4 sts, hdc 9, 2 hdc in next 8 sts, hdc 9, 2 hdc in last 4 sts, join (50 stitches)
Face Stripe Pattern
- H-8 5 mm crochet hook
- white yarn
Baby Size Stripe
Locate the five stitches in the center of the top of the snout. Join your white yarn to the stitch that is on the right hand side.
Row 1: Ch 2, hdc 5, turn (5 stitches)
Rows 2-7: Ch 2, hdc 5, turn (5 stitches)
Toddler, Child, and Adult Sizes Stripe
Locate the seven stitches in the center of the top of the snout. Join your white yarn to the stitch that is on the right hand side.
Row 1: Ch 2, hdc 7, turn (7 stitches)
Rows 2-10: Ch 2, hdc 7, turn (7 stitches)
Sew the snout and face stripe piece to the front of the hat. Make sure it is centered.
Nostrils Pattern
- H-8 5 mm crochet hook
- tan yarn
- make 2
Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 2, 9 hdc, join with sl st to the top of the first dc (9 stitches)
Sew the nostrils to the snout.
Eyes Pattern
- H-8 5 mm crochet hook
- black yarn
- 2 scraps of white yarn
- make 2
Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 2, 9 dc, join with sl st to the top of the first dc (9 stitches)
Use scrap pieces of white yarn to add the eye sparkle.
Sew the eyes to the hat.
Smile Instructions
Use pink or black yarn to add a smile.
Ears Pattern
- H-8 5 mm crochet hook
- tan yarn
- make 2
Row 1: Ch 5, hdc in 3rd ch from the hook and in each rem ch, turn (3 stitches)
Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in each st, turn (3 stitches)
Row 3: Ch 2, 2 hdc, hdc, 2 hdc, turn (5 stitches)
Row 4: Ch 2, hdc in each st, turn (5 stitches)
Row 5: Ch 2, 2 hdc, hdc in 3, 2 hdc, turn (7 stitches)
Row 6: Ch 2, hdc in each st, turn (7 stitches)
Row 7: Ch 2, hdc in each st, turn (7 stitches)
Row 8: Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in 3, hdc2tog, turn (5 stitches)
Row 9: Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc, hdc2tog, turn (3 stitches)
Row 10: Ch 2, hdc3tog (1 stitch)
Single crochet around the entire shape and fasten off. Leave a long tail for sewing.
Sew the ears to the hat.
Mane Instructions
Add scraps of brown hair between the ears. Make sure the scraps are long enough to cover the top of the face stripe.
