My Dorothy wig pattern has lots of fun uses! It’s perfect for Halloween, completing a Dorothy costume from “The Wizard of Oz.” You can also wear it to costume parties to stand out with a handmade touch.

Crochet Terms

  • dc = double crochet stitches
  • sc = single crochet stitches
  • ch/chs = chain/chains
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • rnd/rnds = round/rounds

Crochet Pattern Notes

  • The chain at the beginning of each round does not count as your first stitch. 
  • Join each round with a slip stitch to the first stitch made in that round. 
  • Repeat instructions between the asterisks (*) for the rest of the round.
  • You are crocheting in the round from the top of the hat down.
  • The pattern is written in US terms.

Magic Circle Alternative

If you find the magic circle tricky, try this easier method for round 1.

Chain 4, make 11 dc in the 4th ch from the hook, join (11 stitches)

Dorothy Braids Instructions

Cut 36-inch long strips of yarn. Pull each strip halfway through the indicated stitches. Then, braid the strips of yarn together and trim.

0-3 Month Baby

Cut 20 strips. Attach them to 10 stitches on each side of the hat. Leave 16 stitches in the front and 12 in the back.

3-6 Month Baby

Cut 24 strips. Attach them to 12 stitches on each side of the hat. Leave 16 stitches in the front and 12 in the back.

6-12 Month Baby

Cut 24 strips. Attach them to 12 stitches on each side of the hat. Leave 18 stitches in the front and 14 in the back.

Toddler Size

Cut 28 strips. Attach them to 14 stitches on each side of the hat. Leave 18 stitches in the front and 14 in the back.

Child Size

Cut 28 strips. Attach them to 14 stitches on each side of the hat. Leave 20 stitches in the front and 16 in the back.

Adult Size

Cut 28 strips. Attach them to 14 stitches on each side of the hat. Leave 22 stitches in the front and 18 in the back.

Bows for the Braids

Make 2 using blue yarn.

Ch 60 and fasten off. Then, tie each bow to the bottom of the braid.
