Free Slouchy Beanie Crochet Pattern

Slouchy beanies have become a fashion favorite because of their relaxed, casual style that goes with just about anything. They’re perfect for adding a touch of effortless cool to any outfit. Pair a slouchy beanie with a cozy sweater and jeans for a laid-back look, or throw it on with a jacket and boots to keep warm while staying stylish.

The extra slouch gives it a unique silhouette that stands out, making it a must-have accessory for fall and winter. It’s no wonder everyone loves slouchy beanies!

Crochet Project Materials Needed

  • Crochet Hook Size: J-10 6 mm hook
  • Yarn: Worsted weight yarn. I used 1 skein of Red Heart Super Saver in light gray.
  • Yarn needle/tapestry needle: Use this to weave in your ends.
  • Scissors: Use scissors to fasten off your yarn.
  • Stitch marker(s): Use these to help keep track of your stitches.

Best Yarn for Slouch Beanies

Choosing the right yarn is key to making the perfect slouchy beanie. My pattern calls for medium/worsted weight yarn, which gives the hat just the right amount of drape and slouch. I used acrylic yarn, which is a great choice because it’s soft, durable, and holds its shape well.

Acrylic is also easy to care for and comes in a wide variety of colors, so you can customize your beanie to suit your style. Whether you prefer a single color, stripes or different colors, or even variegated yarn, this pattern will look great with any choice.

Please make a gauge swatch before you begin. If you have more than 15 stitches in 4 inches, try a larger hook. If you have less then 15 stitches, try a smaller hook.

15 stitches & 12 rows (sc, hdc, dc pattern) = 4 inches

Crochet Terms

  • dc = double crochet stitches
  • hdc = half double crochet stitches
  • sc = single crochet stitches
  • ch/chs = chain/chains
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch

Slouchy Beanie Crochet Pattern Notes

  • At the end of each round, join your yarn to the first stitch with a slip stitch.
  • Repeat the instructions between the asterisks (*) for the rest of the round.
  • The pattern is worked in the round and also from the top of the hat down.
  • The easy pattern is written in US terms.

Magic Circle Alternative

If you find the magic circle (also known as a magic ring or magic loop) tricky, try this easier method for round 1: Chain 4, make 11 dc in the 4th ch from the hook, join (stitch count = 11)
