Free Crochet Slouchy Beanie Pattern

Not only is this slouchy crochet beanie stylish, but it also makes a great gift for a friend or loved one. 

This is the best slouchy hat pattern for beginners

This is a great pattern for an absolute crochet beginner because it uses only basic stitches. The simple pattern repeats rounds of three different stitches (dc, hdc, sc) making it the perfect way to practice your crochet skills. Start with a single color and then when you feel more confident, you can try making color changes.

Materials Needed

  • Crochet Hook Size: J-10 6 mm hook
  • Yarn: Worsted weight yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver in light gray (1 skein of yarn)
  • Yarn needle: Use this to weave in your ends.
  • Scissors: Use scissors to fasten off your yarn.
  • Stitch markers: Use these to help keep track of your stitches. 
  • Tape measure: Use a measuring tape to find your head circumference.
  • Pom maker: Optional. Use this tool to make a pom pom for the top of the beanie.

Crochet Slouchy Beanie Pattern

Skill Level

Beginner. This free crochet pattern uses basic crochet stitches in rounds. 

Finished Measurements

One size fits most teens and adults. Fits a head circumference of 20-23 inches.

Gauge

15 stitches = 4 inches

12 rows (sc, hdc, dc pattern repeat) = 4 inches

Supplies

  • Hook: J-10 6 mm hook
  • Yarn: Medium weight 
  • Notions: tapestry needle 

Crochet Terms

  • dc = double crochet stitches
  • hdc = half double crochet stitches
  • sc = single crochet stitches
  • ch/chs = chain/chains
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch

Pattern Notes

  • Leave a long tail for weaving in when you make your magic circle (magic ring).
  • After each round, join your yarn to the first stitch with a slip stitch.
  • Repeat the instructions between the asterisks (*) for the rest of the round.
  • The pattern is worked in the round and from the top of the hat down.
  • The pattern is written in US terms.

Crochet the hat

Rnd 1: Magic circle, 11 dc, join. (11 stitches)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st, join. (22 stitches)

Rnd 3: Ch 2, *2 hdc, hdc in next st, repeat from * around, join. (33 stitches)

Rnd 4: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next 2 sts, repeat from * around, join. (44 stitches)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, *2 sc, sc in next 10 sts, repeat from * around, join. (48 stitches)

Rnd 6: Ch 2, *2 hdc, hdc in next 11 sts, repeat from * around, join. (52 stitches)

Rnd 7: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next 12 sts, repeat from * around, join. (56 stitches)

Rnd 8: Ch 1, *2 sc, sc in next 13 sts, repeat from * around, join. (60 stitches)

Rnd 9: Ch 2, *2 hdc, hdc in next 14 sts, repeat from * around, join. (64 stitches)

Rnd 10: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next 15 sts, repeat from * around, join. (68 stitches)

Rnd 11: Ch 1, sc in each st, join. (68 stitches)

Rnd 12: Ch 2, hdc in each st, join. (68 stitches)

Rnd 13: Ch 2, dc in each st, join. (68 stitches)

Rnds 14-34: Repeat rounds 11-13 (68 stitches)

Rnd 35: Ch 1, sc in each st, join. (68 stitches)
