C2C crochet heart hat pattern

This C2C crochet heart hat pattern features one bold colorwork heart on a cozy beanie with a stretchy ribbed brim and optional pom pom. It’s a fun choice for Valentine’s Day, matching family hats, handmade gifts, or adding a playful heart design to winter outfits.

Quick answer

This advanced beginner C2C crochet heart hat pattern uses worsted weight (#4) yarn and an H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook. The main hat panel is worked flat in C2C blocks, seamed into a tube, and shaped at the top in joined rounds. A separate back-loop single crochet brim is sewn to the lower edge, and the pattern includes toddler, child, and adult sizes.

What is corner-to-corner crochet (C2C)?

Corner-to-corner crochet, or C2C, is a technique where you crochet diagonally instead of in straight rows. It uses small blocks made with chains and double crochet stitches, making it a great way to create simple colorwork designs like this heart.

Assemble the hat

Fold the C2C panel with the wrong side facing out and align the two short edges.

Thread the long yarn tail onto a yarn needle and sew the short edges together to form a tube.

Secure the yarn, then turn the hat right side out.

Close the top

Join the main color to the top edge of the hat.

Round 2: Ch 2, dc2tog around. Join. (38 sts)
Round 3: Ch 2, dc2tog around. Join. (19 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail.

Close the crown opening

Thread the long yarn tail onto a yarn needle.

Weave the needle through the remaining stitches around the crown and pull tightly to close the opening.

Secure the yarn and weave in the end.

Crochet the ribbed brim

Use the H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook and the main color.

Row 1: Ch 9. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch across. Turn. (8 sts)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in blo of each st across. Turn. (8 sts)

Continue repeating Row 2 until you have the following total number of rows, including Row 1:

  • Toddler: 66 rows total
  • Child: 70 rows total
  • Adult: 76 rows total

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.

Attach the brim

Keep the brim strip flat. Do not sew the short ends together yet.

Position the brim around the lower edge of the hat.

Using the long yarn tail and a yarn needle, sew the brim to the bottom edge of the C2C panel.

Match 2 rows of the ribbed brim to each C2C block along the lower edge of the hat. Stretch the brim evenly as you sew.

Continue sewing until the brim is attached all the way around the hat.

Bring the two short ends of the brim together and sew them securely closed to complete the brim seam.

Secure the yarn and weave in the remaining end.

Adding a pom pom

The pom pom is optional. Add it only after the crown has been completely closed.

Yarn pom pom

  1. Wrap yarn evenly around both arches of a large pom pom maker.
  2. Cut the yarn along the center groove.
  3. Tie a strong piece of scrap yarn tightly around the center.
  4. Open the pom pom maker and remove the pom pom.
  5. Fluff the pom pom and trim the strands evenly.
  6. Leave the tying strands long and use them to sew the pom pom securely to the center top of the hat.

Finishing

Weave in any remaining yarn ends.

Make sure the C2C panel seam, crown closure, brim attachment, and brim seam are all secure.
