This bucket hat is made in three parts: four C2C heart squares form the hat band, a separate crown is attached to the top, and the brim is worked directly around the lower edge.

Crochet the C2C heart squares

Make 4 heart squares using a G-6 (4 mm) crochet hook.

Use gray yarn for the background and white yarn for the heart.

You can follow the C2C heart graph or use the written instructions below.

  • Each number tells you how many C2C blocks to work in that color.

Border the heart squares

Using gray yarn, work a border around each square.

Work 2 sc into the edge of each C2C block along each side.

At each corner, work:

(2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc)

Each side should have 18 sc, not counting the ch-2 corner space.

Join with a sl st to the first sc and fasten off.

Join the heart squares

Arrange the 4 heart squares side by side with the hearts upright and the same side facing outward.

Using gray yarn, single crochet through the corresponding border stitches along the sides of two squares to join them.

Continue joining the squares side by side.

Join the first and last squares in the same way to form a ring.

When finished, the heart band should have:

  • 72 sc along the top edge
  • 72 sc along the bottom edge

Do not count the ch-2 corner spaces as stitches.

Crochet the crown

Use an H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook and gray yarn.

The crown is worked separately in joined rounds.

Round 1: Make a magic circle. Ch 2, work 12 dc into the ring. Join with a sl st to the first dc. (12 sts)
Round 2: Ch 2, work 2 dc in each st around. Join. (24 sts)
Round 3: Ch 2, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st; repeat from * around. Join. (36 sts)
Round 4: Ch 2, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts; repeat from * around. Join. (48 sts)
Round 5: Ch 2, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts; repeat from * around. Join. (60 sts)
Round 6: Ch 2, *2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts; repeat from * around. Join. (72 sts)

Fasten off.

Attach the crown to the heart band

The crown has 72 sts, and the top edge of the heart band has 72 sc.

Position the crown above the heart band with the right sides facing outward.

Align each crown stitch with one sc along the top edge of the heart band. Skip the ch-2 corner spaces.

Join gray yarn.

Single crochet through the back loop of each crown stitch and the front loop of each corresponding heart-band sc around.

Join with a sl st to the first sc.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Crochet the brim

Use an H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook and gray yarn.

Join gray yarn to any sc along the bottom edge of the heart band. Skip the ch-2 corner spaces while working the brim.

You should begin with 72 sts.

Round 1: Ch 1, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st; repeat from * around. Join. (108 sts)
Round 2: Ch 2, hdc in each st around. Join. (108 sts)
Round 3: Ch 2, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts; repeat from * around. Join. (144 sts)
Round 4: Ch 2, hdc in each st around. Join. (144 sts)
Round 5: Ch 2, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 3 sts; repeat from * around. Join. (180 sts)
Round 6: Ch 2, hdc in each st around. Join. (180 sts)

Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in all remaining yarn ends with a yarn needle.

Gently shape the crown, heart band, and brim by hand.

Make sure all four panel seams and the crown seam are secure before wearing the hat.
