I thought it would be fun to design a slouchier style hat in a classic pattern. I love the look of Houndstooth and thought the black and white colors would look awesome for a New Years Eve beanie. To make the beanie more festive, I decided to add a pom pom made from a brightly colored bulky yarn. I think the color combination goes well with both gold and silver. The best part is, the hat works up quickly and is much easier to make than you would think. This beanie will keep you warm and looking stylish while you ring in the New Year!

– Crochet Hook:I 5.5 mm or hook needed to obtain gauge

Crochet hook: I 5.5 mm
Yarn: black and white

The brim is worked flat in rows and is joined in the round at the end.

Begin with black  yarn.

Row 1: chain 7, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each of the 5 rem chs, turn [6]

You are working in the back loops (BL) only for rows 2- 70

Rows 2- 70: ch 1, sc in each st in the BL, turn [6]

Join your brim in the round and sc the two ends together. Do not fasten off.

I apologize for the photo quality. I was working in the car on the way to Disney.

Flip your brim inside out so that your seam ends up on the inside/wrong side. You will have to pull your skein of working yarn through the middle so that it doesn’t end up on the wrong side of your work.

Chain 1 and sc in each row of the brim (there are 70 rows of the brim so you should end up with 70 sc). It is VERY IMPORTANT that you end up with an even (a multiple of 2) number of stitches. Do not fasten off.

You will be alternating your colors for each round. Do not fasten off, simply pull the working yarn up when the color is needed.

Rnd 1: (black) ch 1, sc in the first st, dc in the next st, repeat the pattern of alternating between a sc and a dc for the remainder of the round, join [70]

Rnd 2: (join the white yarn) ch 1, dc in the first st, sc in the next st, repeat the pattern of alternating between a dc and a sc for the remainder of the round, join [70]

Instructions between two asterisks should be repeated for the remainder of the round.

Tool: extra large pom pom maker
Yarn: hot pink

Firmly and evenly wind your hot pink yarn around each set of arches. After the first set of arches, close them and then wind your yarn around the second set.

Photos are from my Santa Hat pattern.

Cut the yarn between each set of arches.

Use your scrap piece of black yarn to tie the pom pom in place. I recommend you double/triple knot it.

Carefully open the arches.

Use a hot melt adhesive to place a dab of glue in the center of the pom pom. This will help prevent it from unraveling.

Fluff your pom pom and trim any long ends.

Use a tapestry needle to attach your pom pom to the top of your hat.
