3 Crochet Bookmark Patterns for Beginners

Free Crochet Bookmark Pattern
Materials Needed
- Crochet Hook Size: G-6 4 mm
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn #4
Bookworm: green, gray, & white
Pencil: yellow, gray, tan, dark gray, & pink
Ruler: tan & dark gray - Yarn needle: Use this to weave in your ends.
- Scissors: Use scissors to fasten off your yarn.
- Stitch marker(s): Optional. Use these to help keep track of your stitches.

Beginner. The crochet bookmark patterns are made using basic crochet stitches in easy repeating steps.

Bookworm | 3″ wide x 6″ long |
Pencil | 2.5″ wide x 7.5″ long |
Ruler | 2.5″ wide x 6.5″ long |
Crochet Terms
- dc = double crochet
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- hdc2tog = half double crochet decrease
- ch/chs = chain/chains
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- sl st = slip stitch
- rnd/rnds = round/rounds
- rem = remaining
Pattern Notes
- The bookworm is worked in the round.
- Join the bookworm rounds with a slip stitch to the first stitch made in that round.
- The pencil and ruler are worked in rows.
- The chain at the beginning of a round or row does not count as a stitch.
- Repeat the instructions between the asterisks (*) for the rest of the round.
- The patterns are written in US terms.

Bookworm Crochet Bookmark Pattern
- Use green yarn for the head, body, & tail.
- Make 2 of each: body & eyes
Bookworm Head
Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 2, 12 dc, join (12 stitches)
Rnd 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st, join (24 stitches)
Rnd 3: ch 2, 2 dc, dc in next st, join and fasten off (36 stitches)
Bookworm Body
Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 2, 12 dc, join (12 stitches)
Rnd 2: ch 2, 2 dc in each st, join and fasten off (24 stitches)
Bookworm Tail
Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 2, 12 dc, join and fasten off (12 stitches)
Now, sew the four sections together with a tapestry needle.
Bookworm Eyes
Begin with white yarn.
Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 2, 12 dc, join (12 stitches)
Switch to charcoal yarn.
Rnd 2: ch 1, sc in each st, join and fasten off (12 stitches)
Finishing the Bookworm Crochet Bookmark Pattern
- Sew the head, body, and tail sections together.
- Stitch pupils onto the eyes.
- Sew the eyes to the head.
- Add reading glasses by stitching a line to connect the eyes.
- Add a smile.
Pencil Crochet Bookmark Pattern
Begin with pink yarn.
Row 1: ch 14, hdc in 3rd ch from the hook and in each rem chain, turn (12 stitches)
Rows 2-4: ch 2, hdc in each st, turn (12 stitches)
Switch to gray yarn.
Rows 5-7: ch 2, hdc in each st, turn (12 stitches)
Switch to yellow yarn.
Rows 8- 22: ch 2, hdc in each st, turn (12 stitches)
Switch to tan yarn.
Row 23: ch 2, hdc in each st, turn (12 stitches)
Row 24: ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in 8, hdc2tog, turn (10 stitches)
Row 25: ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in 6, hdc2tog, turn (8 stitches)
Row 26: ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in 4, hdc2tog, turn (6 stitches)
Switch to dark gray yarn.
Row 27: ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in 2, hdc2tog, turn (4 stitches)
Row 28: ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc2tog, turn (2 stitches)
Row 29: ch 2, hdc2tog and finish off.
Finishing the Pencil Crochet Bookmark Pattern
Fasten off and weave in all of the ends.
Ruler Crochet Bookmark Pattern
Use tan yarn.
Row 1: ch 14, hdc in 3rd ch from the hook and in each rem chain, turn (12 stitches)
Rows 2-24: ch 2, hdc in each st, turn (12 stitches)
Finishing the Ruler Crochet Bookmark Pattern
- Fasten off and weave in your ends.
- Use dark gray yarn to stitch the ruler lines and numbers.
