Crochet Project Materials Needed
- Crochet Hook Size: E 3.5 mm
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in dark brown, black, white, orange, and green.
- Yarn needle: Use this to weave in your ends.
- Scissors: Use scissors to fasten off your yarn.

- hdc = half double crochet
- sc = single crochet
- sc2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together
- sc3tog = single crochet 3 stitches together
- ch/chs = chain/chains
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- rnd/rnds = round/rounds
- sl st = slip stitch
- rem = remaining
Free Crochet Snowman Pattern Notes
- The pattern starts with a magic circle.
- Join each round with a slip stitch to the first stitch made in that round.
- Repeat instructions between the asterisks (*) for the rest of the round.
- The pattern is written in US terms.
Magic Circle Alternative
If you’re not comfortable with using a magic circle, you can use an alternative method to make round 1 of the pattern. This method is just as effective and might be easier for beginners.
Round 1: Chain 4, make 10 dc in the 4th ch from the hook, join (10 stitches)

Head for the Crochet Snowman Pattern
Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 2, 10 dc, join (10 stitches)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st, join (20 stitches)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next st*, join (30 stitches)
Scarf for the Crochet Snowman Pattern
Join the green yarn on right side of head and then ch 2 and dc 9. Now you will make the part of the scarf that hangs down.
Ch 6, dc in the 3rd ch from the hook and in each of the 3 rem chs, and join to the main part of the scarf. Fasten off leaving a long tail for later.
Body for the Crochet Snowman Pattern
Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 2, 10 dc, join (10 stitches)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st, join (20 stitches)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next st*, join (30 stitches)
Rnd 4: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next 2 sts*, join (40 stitches)
Rnd 5: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next 3 sts*, join (50 stitches)
Use a tapestry needle and the yarn tail from the scarf to attach the head to the body.
Hat for the Crochet Snowman Pattern
Leave a long yarn tail when you start your chain. You will need this when you sew the hat onto the head.
Row 1: Ch 12, hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook, turn
Row 2: Sl st in 3 sts, ch 2 and dc in the same st (the 3rd st) and dc in the next 5 sts, turn (6 stitches)
Row 3: Ch 2, dc in each st, turn (6 stitches)
Row 4: Ch 2, dc in each st, fasten off (6 stitches)
Use a tapestry needle to sew the hat onto the head.
Nose for the Crochet Snowman Pattern
Row 1: Ch 5 and sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each rem ch, turn (4 stitches)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st, turn (4 stitches)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc, sc2tog, sc, turn (3 stitches)
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each st, turn (3 stitches)
Row 5: Ch 1, sc3tog, fasten off leaving a long tail to sew onto head.
Use a tapestry needle to sew the nose onto the face.
Arms for the Crochet Snowman Pattern
Do not fasten off until you have completed the entire arm.
Arm: Ch 6, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each rem ch (5 stitches)
First Branch: Ch 3, sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in the rem chain, join to the arm
Second Branch: Ch 3 and sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in the rem ch, join to the arm again and then fasten off
Use a tapestry needle to sew the arms to the body.
Buttons for the Crochet Snowman Pattern
Magic circle, ch 1, 9 hdc, join and then fasten off leaving a long tail to sew onto body.
Use a tapestry needle to sew the buttons onto the body. See the picture for button placement.
Eyes for the Crochet Snowman Pattern
Use a tapestry needle and a scrap of black yarn to make two lines above the nose for eyes.
