Materials needed
- Size E (3.5 mm) crochet hook
- Worsted weight yarn (#4) in dark brown, black, white, orange, and green
- Yarn needle
- Scissors

My crochet snowman measures about 6 inches long by 5 inches wide (15.2 × 12.7 cm).
Gauge
Gauge is not critical for this pattern. Small differences in tension will only slightly affect the finished size.

- hdc = half double crochet
- sc = single crochet
- sc2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together
- sc3tog = single crochet 3 stitches together
- ch/chs = chain/chains

Pattern notes
- The ch 1 or ch 2 at the beginning of a round or row does not count as a stitch.

Crochet snowman applique pattern instructions
Snowman head
Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 2, 10 dc, join (10 stitches)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st, join (20 stitches)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next st*, join (30 stitches)
Adding the scarf
Join green yarn to the right side of the head. Ch 2, dc in each of the next 9 sts. Now you will make the part of the scarf that hangs down.
Ch 6. Dc in the 3rd ch from the hook and in each of the next 3 chs. Join to the main scarf and fasten off, leaving a long tail for assembly.
Snowman body
Rnd 1: Magic circle, ch 2, 10 dc, join (10 stitches)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st, join (20 stitches)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next st*, join (30 stitches)
Rnd 4: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next 2 sts*, join (40 stitches)
Rnd 5: Ch 2, *2 dc, dc in next 3 sts*, join (50 stitches)
Use a yarn needle and the yarn tail from the scarf to attach the head to the body.
Adding the hat
Leave a long yarn tail when you start your chain. You will need this when you sew the hat onto the head.
Row 1: Ch 12, hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and in each ch across. Turn. (10 sts)
Row 2: Sl st in 3 sts, ch 2 and dc in the same st (the 3rd st) and dc in the next 5 sts, turn (6 stitches)
Row 3: Ch 2, dc in each st, turn (6 stitches)
Row 4: Ch 2, dc in each st, fasten off (6 stitches)
Use a yarn needle to sew the hat onto the head.
Snowman nose
Row 1: Ch 5 and sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each rem ch, turn (4 stitches)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st, turn (4 stitches)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc, sc2tog, sc, turn (3 stitches)
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each st, turn (3 stitches)
Row 5: Ch 1, sc3tog, fasten off leaving a long tail to sew onto head.
Use a yarn needle to sew the nose onto the face.
Snowman arms
Make 2. Do not fasten off until you have completed the entire arm.
Arm: Ch 6, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each rem ch (5 stitches)
First Branch: Ch 3, sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in the rem chain, join to the arm with a slip stitch
Second Branch: Ch 3 and sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in the rem ch, join to the arm with a slip stitch again and then fasten off
Use a yarn needle to sew the arms to the body.
Adding the buttons
Make 3.
Magic circle, ch 1, 9 hdc, join and then fasten off leaving a long tail to sew onto body.

Snowman eyes
Use a yarn needle and a scrap of black yarn to make two lines above the nose for eyes.
Finishing
Weave in all remaining yarn ends securely.
