This easy tote bag crochet pattern is made using 24 granny squares. It’s much easier than it looks. The granny squares all follow the same pattern; you simply change the yarn colors.
You can use shades of orange yarn like I did, or pick your own colors to express your personal style. Create a bag that really stands out! Whether you’re planning a day at the beach or a trip to the farmers market, this bag is just the right size. It’s even sturdy enough for a quick stop at the grocery store!
The Best Yarn for Making Crochet Bags
It’s important to choose the right yarn for your crochet projects. Acrylic yarns are a popular choice because they are a durable yarn and often come in many bright colors.

Crochet Bag Pattern Free- Information
Skill Levels
Advanced beginners. This free crochet pattern uses basic crochet stitches, special stitches, color work, and/or shaping.
Crochet Project Materials Needed
- Crochet Hook Size: I-9 5.5 mm crochet hook
Optional: J-10 6 mm crochet hook for the straps - Yarn weight: Worsted weight yarn #4 in three shades of orange and white yarn. My bag weighs 10.2 oz/289 grams.
- Yarn needle: Use this to weave in your ends.
- Scissors: Use scissors to fasten off your yarn.
- Stitch marker(s): Optional. Use these to help keep track of your stitches.

Finished Bag Size
The bag measures 17 inches wide and 22 inches tall (14″ excluding straps).

Gauge is not important for this pattern.

- sc = single crochet stitches
- dc = double crochet stitches
- ps = puff stitch
- bo = bobble stitch
- FPdc = front post double crochet
- BPdc = back post double crochet
- blo = back loop only
- ch/chs = chain stitch/chains
- ch-sp = chain space
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- sl st = slip stitch
- rnd/rnds = round/rounds
Crochet Bag Pattern Free- Notes
- You need 24 total squares.
- Join each round with slip stitches to the top of the first stitch made in that round.
- The bobble stitches will pop out on the “wrong side”. Just pop them to the “right side”.
- The beginning chain does not count as a stitch.
- To make color changes, join using the next yarn color needed.
- The pattern is written in US terms.

Puff st (ps):
- YO, insert hook in next stitch & pull up a loop (3 loops on hook)
- YO, insert hook in same stitch and pull up a loop (5 loops on hook)
- YO, insert hook in same stitch and pull up a loop (7 loops on hook)
- YO and pull through all 7 loops.
Bobble st (bo):
- YO, insert hook in next stitch, YO, pull up a loop, YO pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook)
- YO, insert hook in same stitch, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook)
- YO, insert hook in same stitch, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops (4 loops on hook)
- YO, insert hook in same stitch, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops (5 loops on hook)

Granny Squares Color Order
You need 24 total granny squares. Make 4 of each color sequence. Use the same color for rounds 1 & 2.

Crochet Bag Pattern Free- Instructions
Make 24. See special stitches. Use white yarn for round 5.
Round 1: Magic circle, make 11 dc, join (11 stitches)
Round 2: Ch 2, (ps, ch 1) around, join (11 ps and 11 ch-1)
Round 3: Ch 2, [bo, sc in next ch-1 sp] around, join (11 bo & 11 sc)
Round 4: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st, join (44 dc)
Switch to white yarn.
Round 5: Ch 2, [(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc), dc in next 10 sts] around, join (56 dc)
Granny Square Bag Pattern Layout
Lay the granny squares out as shown in the picture and single crochet the edges together.
Next, fold along the dotted lines and then single crochet the remaining edges together. Leave the top two rows of granny squares open (green line).
Adding the Bag Straps
Tip: Use a J-10 6 mm crochet hook to make the chains. The larger chains are easier to crochet into.
Join yarn on the bottom right side of the bag opening.
Round 1: Single crochet to the peak of the square (pink dot). Chain 75 and join to the other peak (pink dot). Continue to single crochet around to the first peak on the other side, chain 75 and join to the next peak, sc to end, join.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each stitch and in each chain, join
Rounds 3: Ch 1, sc in each stitch, join and fasten off.
