Here’s a quick overview of the materials, sizing, gauge, and pattern notes before you begin.
Skill level
Beginner. This crochet hat for cat uses basic crochet stitches.
Materials needed
- Crochet Hook Size: I-9 5.5 mm
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (#4) in tan and black. I used Lion Brand Yarn’s Wool Ease in wheat.
- Yarn needle: Use this to weave in your ends.
- Scissors: Use scissors to fasten off your yarn.
- Stitch marker(s): Optional. Use these to help keep track of your stitches.
- Small pom maker (1.38): Use this for the kitten hat.
Finished size
This hat fits Thor, who is a 4-month-old kitten. To ensure it fits your cat, please check the finished measurements before starting the project.
- Flat across the front = 6 inches
- Front space between ears = 1 inch
- Back space between ears = 2.5 inches
- Ear hole width = 2 inches
- Hat height = 2.75 inches (not including the pom)
Gauge
8 stitches = 2 inches (5 cm)
Crochet abbreviations
- dc = double crochet
- ch/chs = chain/chains
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- sl st = slip stitch
- rem = remaining
Pattern notes
- The chain at the beginning of each round does not count as your first stitch.
- Join each round with a slip stitch to the first stitch made in that round.
- Repeat instructions between the asterisks (*) for the rest of the round.
- You are crocheting in the round from the top of the hat down.

Magic circle alternative
If you’re not comfortable with using a magic circle, you can use an alternative method to make round 1 of the pattern. This method is just as effective and might be easier for beginners.
Round 1: Chain 4, make 10 dc in the 4th ch from the hook, join (10 stitches)

Round 1: Magic circle, ch 3, 10 dc, join (10 stitches)
Round 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in each st, join (20 stitches)
Round 3: Ch 3, in the first 4 sts work: 2 dc, dc, 2 dc, dc, chain 12 and skip over 4 sts, in the next 4 sts work: 2 dc, dc, 2 dc, dc, chain 12 and skip over 4 sts, in the last 4 sts work: 2 dc, dc, 2 dc, dc, join (18 stitches & 2 chains)
Round 4: Ch 3, in the first 6 sts work: 2 dc, dc, dc, 2 dc, dc, dc, work 12 dc sts around the chain, in the next 6 sts work: 2 dc, dc, dc, 2 dc, dc, dc, work 12 dc sts around the chain, in the last 6 sts work: 2 dc, dc, dc, 2 dc, dc, dc, join (48 stitches)
Round 5: Ch 3, dc in each st, join (48 stitches)
Switch to black yarn.
Round 6: Ch 3, *dc2tog, dc in 10 sts*, join (44 stitches)
Adding the pom poms
Make 3 small pom poms.
- Wind the yarn around both arches.
- Cut the yarn along the middle gap.
- Tie with a piece of scrap yarn.
- Open the arches and remove the pom pom.
- Trim any loose ends.
Finishing
Attach one pom pom to the top of the cat hat. Then, use strands of yarn to attach two pom poms to each side of the hat. Weave in all of your ends.
