Materials for the Granny Square Crochet Pattern

  • Hook size: H-8 5 mm crochet hook or mm hook size needed for gauge
  • Type of yarn: Worsted weight yarn/medium weight #4. You will need black, purple, green, yellow (small scrap), and white yarn.
  • Tapestry needle: Use this to weave in the ends.
  • Stitch markers: Optional. You can use these to help keep track of your stitches.

  • The granny square pattern is written in US terms.
  • You will make the granny square first and then add the face parts.
  • The stitch counts are listed at the end of each row/round.
  • The granny square is made with the circle to square technique.
  • Join each round with a slip stitch to the first stitch made in that round. 
  • Repeat instructions between the asterisks (*) for the rest of the round.
  • The chain at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.

If you find the magic ring/circle tricky, try this easier method for round 1: Chain 3, make 11 dc in the 3rd ch from the hook, join (11 stitches)

You will make the granny square first and then add the face parts. 

Granny Square Crochet Pattern

Green yarn

Rnd 1: Magic circle, 11 DC, join to first DC (11 stitches)

Rnd 2: Ch 2, make 2 DC in each st, join (22 stitches)

Rnd 3: Ch 2, *2 DC, DC in the next st*, join (33 stitches)

Rnd 4: Ch 2, *2 DC, DC in the next 2 sts*, join with white yarn (44 stitches)

White yarn

Rnd 5: Ch 2, *(2 DC, ch-2, 2 DC), DC in the next 10 sts*, join

Rnds 6-8: Ch 2, DC in each st and (2 DC, ch-2, 2 DC) in each ch-2 corner space 

Witch Hat Pattern

Black yarn

Row 1: Ch 17, SC in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each rem ch, turn (16 stitches)

Row 2: Ch 1, SC in each st, fasten off (16 stitches)

Purple yarn

Skip over 2 sts and join the purple yarn to the 3rd st

Row 3: Ch 1, SC in 12 sts, turn (12 stitches)

Row 4: Ch 1, sc2tog, SC 8, sc2tog, turn (10 stitches)

Black yarn

Row 5: Ch 1, SC in each st, turn (10 stitches)

Row 6: Ch 1, sc2tog, SC 6, sc2tog, turn (8 stitches)

Row 7: Ch 1, SC in each st, turn (8 stitches)

Row 8: Ch 1, sc2tog, SC 4, sc2tog, turn (6 stitches)

Row 9: Ch 1, SC in each st, turn (6 stitches)

Row 10: Ch 1, sc2tog, SC 2, sc2tog, turn (4 stitches)

Row 11: Ch 1, SC in each st, turn (4 stitches)

Row 12: Ch 1, sc2togsc2tog, turn (2 stitches)

Row 13: Ch 1, SC in each st, turn (2 stitches)

Row 14: Ch 1, sc2tog and fasten off (1 stitch)

Use a scrap of yellow yarn to stitch a buckle on the hat and then sew the witch hat to the granny square. 

Witch Eyes

Make 2 using white yarn.

Ch 2, make 6 SC in the 2nd ch from the hook, join and fasten off (6 stitches)

Tie a little bit of black leftover yarn into a small knots and attach to the center of each eye. Sew the eyes to the witch face.

Hair Curls Pattern

Make 4 using purple yarn.

Ch 14, make 2 HDC in the 3rd ch from the hook and in each rem ch, fasten off (24 stitches)

Attach two hair curls to each side of the witch face. 

Smile Instructions

Use black yarn to stitch a smile on the witch face.
