What is tapestry crochet?

Tapestry crochet is a crochet technique where you use multiple colors of yarn to create patterns and designs in your projects.

With tapestry crochet, you make color changes following a picture graph (also known as a “grid” or “pixel chart”) or written instructions.

Tapestry crochet allows for intricate patterns and color work, like this heart tapestry crochet pattern.

This heart coaster is perfect for beginners!

If you’re new to tapestry crochet, this heart coaster pattern is a fantastic starting point. Why? Because it only uses two colors, making it much simpler to manage as you learn.

Plus, since it’s a small project, you won’t feel overwhelmed. It’s a great way to practice changing colors and get comfortable with the tapestry crochet technique while making something adorable and useful.

Pattern notes

  • Make color changes indicated by the graph or the written instructions.
  • The coaster is made in rows of single crochet stitches.
  • Each square on the graph represents a single crochet stitch.
  • The color of the square indicates the color of yarn you should use for that stitch.
  • Read the graph from right to left ← on odd-numbered rows and left to right → on even-numbered rows.
  • ← you are working on the “right side” on odd-numbered rows.
  • → you are working on the “wrong” side” on even-numbered rows.

Color changes

  • To change colors, work the last yarn over of a stitch with the new color. This sets up your yarn for the next stitch in the new color.
  • Carry unused colors across the row by laying them over the stitches you’re working into, so you can pick them up as needed. This is known as tapestry crochet!

If you don’t want to add tassels to your coaster, you can add a single crochet border to your coaster instead.

Adding a border

Single crochet in each stitch and in the side of each row. In each corner make 3 single crochet stitches.

Adding tassels

Adding tassels to your coaster will make it a fun “mug rug”! I love how my coaster turned out. Here are step by step instructions:

  1. Cut 6 inch long strips of yarn.
  2. Fold each strip of yarn in half. This will create a loop at one end and two loose ends at the other.
  3. Attach the tassels along the edge of the coaster. Insert your crochet hook through the stitch at the edge of the coaster from front to back.
  4. Hook the looped end of your folded yarn with your crochet hook and pull it halfway through the stitch on the coaster. You should have a loop on one side of the coaster and the loose ends on the other side.
  5. Pull the loose ends of the yarn through the loop you just created. Tighten gently to secure the tassel to the coaster.
  6. Repeat this process along both ends of the coaster, spacing the tassels evenly. You can add as many or as few as you like, depending on how full you want the tassel effect to be.
  7. Once all tassels are attached, check the length of each one and trim them if necessary to ensure they are even and tidy.

Finishing the heart coaster

Fasten off and then weave in the yarn tails. Block if desired.
