Crochet Bag Pattern
Skill Level
Advanced beginners. This crochet tote bag pattern is made using the corner to corner (c2c) stitch pattern method. It involves color work and shaping.
Finished Measurements
My crocheted bag measured 14 inches wide and 18 inches long from the top of the sides to the bottom of the bag.
Gauge
7 squares (ch 3 + 3 dc) = 4 inches
For reference, my gauge tends to be on the tighter end. It’s okay if your gauge isn’t the exact same as mine. Just keep in mind that your finished size will be different if your gauge is different.
Crochet Terms
- dc = double crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- hdc2tog = half double crochet decrease
- ch/chs = chain/chains
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- sl st = slip stitch
Corner to Corner (c2c) Technique
- The pattern is made using the c2c technique of making “squares” back and forth in diagonal rows starting in the bottom right corner and ending in the top left corner.
- Each square is made of a chain 3 + 3 double crochet.
- Chain 6 to start a new row and chain 3 to start a new square.
- You can follow the picture graph or the written pattern.
- The written pattern tells you how many squares to make of each color and in what order.
Pattern Notes
- You will need 15 squares total.
- If you pick three different colors for the hearts, make five hearts in each color.
- I used black for color a.
- The pattern is written in US terms.
- The strap is made separately and then sewn to the bag
- My strap measured 40 inches long.
Written Instructions
Crochet the squares following the picture graph or the written pattern.
↙ Row 1: color a x 1 (1 square)
↗ Row 2: color a x 2 (2 squares)
↙ Row 3: color a x 3 (3 squares)
↗ Row 4: color a x 4 (4 squares)
↙ Row 5: color a x 5 (5 squares)
↗ Row 6: color a x 1, color b x 4, color a x 1 (6 squares)
↙ Row 7: color a x 1, color b x 4, color a x 2 (7 squares)
↗ Row 8: color a x 2, color b x 5, color a x 1 (8 squares)
↙ Row 9: color a x 2, color b x 4, color a x 3 (9 squares)
Corner: Start decreasing on both ends
↗ Row 10: color a x 2, color b x 5, color a x 1 (8 squares)
↙ Row 11: color a x 1, color b x 4, color a x 2 (7 squares)
↗ Row 12: color a x 1, color b x 3, color a x 2 (6 squares)
↙ Row 13: color a x 1, color b x 3, color a x 1 (5 squares)
↗ Row 14: color a x 1, color b x 2, color a x 1 (4 squares)
↙ Row 15: color a x 3 (3 squares)
↗ Row 16: color a x 2 (2 squares)
↙ Row 17: color a x 1 (1 square)
Assembly
Arrange your squares like the picture shows. The hearts below the red line should be upside down. Then, use a tapestry needle to sew all the squares together.
With the inside of the bag facing you, fold the bottom up where the red dots show. Next, fold in the sides where the green dots are, and use a tapestry needle to sew the seams closed.
Crochet around the opening
Now you will crochet around the opening of the bag. Make three hdc in the side of each square. When you get to the middle low points on each side where three of the squares meet, make a half double crochet decrease.
Adding the strap
I used a solid color for the strap. I made my strap 3 squares wide and 70 squares long using the c2c technique. This will give you a 40 inch long strap.
Keep in mind that the strap WILL stretch quite a bit once you are wearing your bag. Also, the sides of the bag add some height. You may want to make your strap shorter. Stretch it as you make it. For reference, I wore my bag as a crossbody bag (which needs a longer strap) and I am 5’8″ tall.
To make your strap longer or shorter, simply make more or less rows. Use a tapestry needle to sew the strap ends to each side of the top of the bag.
Finishing
Fasten off and then weave in all of your ends.
