Need help counting stitches? My guide on how to count crochet stitches can help before you mark the strap placement.
Marking the strap placement
- Lay the bag flat with the side edges lined up. Each side of the bag has 68 stitches.
- On the front side, count 15 stitches in from the left edge. The next 6 stitches are the first strap end. Mark the first and last stitch of those 6 stitches.
- Count the next 26 stitches across the center. The next 6 stitches are the second strap end. Mark the first and last stitch of those 6 stitches.
- There should be 15 stitches left before the right edge.
- Repeat on the back side of the bag.
Each side should be divided like this: 15 stitches, 6 strap stitches, 26 center stitches, 6 strap stitches, 15 stitches.
First strap
Row 1: Ch 1, sc in the 6 marked stitches for the first strap end, turn.
Rows 2–108: Ch 1, sc in each stitch across, turn. (6 sts)
Fasten off and leave a long tail. Sew the other end of the strap to the 6 marked stitches for the second strap end.
Second strap
Repeat the instructions for the first strap.
Finishing
Use a yarn needle to weave in the ends.
Frequently asked questions
Is this crochet beach bag pattern beginner-friendly?
Yes, this crochet beach bag pattern is beginner-friendly. It uses basic stitches and simple construction. The bag is worked in continuous rounds, so using a stitch marker will help you keep track of the beginning of each round.
What yarn should I use for a crochet beach bag?
Worsted weight cotton yarn is a great choice for a crochet beach bag because it is sturdy, washable, and works well for warm-weather projects. You can also use another worsted weight yarn as long as you check your gauge and like the feel of the fabric.
Can I use this as a market bag?
Yes, this bag can also be used as a crochet market bag. It is roomy enough for small shopping trips, farmers markets, yarn projects, and everyday errands.
Does this crochet bag stretch?
Crochet bags can stretch with use, especially when they are filled with heavier items. Using a sturdy yarn and keeping your stitches even can help the bag hold its shape better.
Do I need to line this crochet beach bag?
No, you do not need to line the bag. The mesh section makes it lightweight and beachy. If you plan to carry small items, you may want to use a pouch inside the bag or add a fabric lining.
How big is the finished crochet beach bag?
The finished beach bag measures approximately 16 inches tall by 21 inches wide, not including the straps.
Can I make the straps longer or shorter?
Yes, you can adjust the strap length by adding or removing rows before sewing the strap ends to the bag. Make both straps the same length so the bag hangs evenly.
