Ears for the bear hat

The bear ears are made separately and are the same for all sizes.

Row 1: Ch 8, dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each remaining ch. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st; repeat across. Turn. (9 sts)
Row 3: Ch 2, dc2tog, dc in next st; repeat across. Turn. (6 sts)
Row 4: Ch 2, dc2tog; repeat across. (3 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Position and stitch the ears securely to the top of the hat.

Pom pom ears (optional)

For a fun, fluffy alternative, make small pom poms to use instead of the crochet ears.

To make pom pom ears:

  • Wrap yarn evenly around both arches of a small pom pom maker.
  • Cut the yarn along the center groove.
  • Tie a tight knot with a separate strand of yarn through the middle.
  • Open the pom maker and gently remove the pom pom.
  • Trim to shape and sew to the top of the hat where ears would go.

Finishing

Fasten off and weave in all remaining yarn ends. Your baby bear hat is ready to wear, gift, or sell!

FAQs

What sizes are included in this pattern?
This pattern includes four baby sizes: Preemie, 0–3 months, 3–6 months, and 6–12 months. Use the size chart above to choose the best fit for your baby.

Is this pattern beginner-friendly?
Yes! This is a great beginner crochet baby hat pattern. It uses simple stitches like double crochet and is worked in the round from the top down with easy shaping.

Can I use different yarn for this pattern?
You can, but I recommend worsted weight (#4) acrylic yarn for the best results. It’s soft, easy to wash, and helps the hat hold its shape. Using a different yarn weight may change the sizing.

Do I have to use a magic circle to start the hat?
Nope! If the magic circle feels tricky, I’ve included a simple chain start as an alternative. Both options work well for this pattern.

Can I sell the hats I make from this pattern?
Absolutely! You’re welcome to sell finished hats made using this pattern. I just ask that you credit Lovable Loops as the designer when possible.
