What is tapestry crochet?
Tapestry crochet is a fun way to crochet using different yarn colors to create patterns or pictures in your projects.
With tapestry crochet, you can use a graph (also known as a “grid” or “pixel chart”) with different colors, or you can follow written instructions that tell you when to change colors.
The cool part is, all you really need to know is how to make basic stitches. Once you get the hang of it, making a crochet tapestry pattern can be a lot of fun!
This is a simple tapestry crochet pattern
For this heart tapestry crochet bookmark, you’ll just make single crochet stitches, changing colors as indicated by the graph or instructions.
As you crochet, you’ll see the cute hearts appear in your work! It’s like coloring with yarn.

Crochet project materials needed
- Crochet hook: H-8 5mm hook size
- Yarn: worsted weight yarn in different colors (white, purple, blue, yellow, and pink)
- Copy of the heart bookmark graph
- Scissors
- Yarn needle for weaving the yarn tails in
The best yarn to use for your bookmark
This beautiful bookmark is among my favorite scrap yarn crochet projects! It’s a great way to bust that stash because you can use almost any type of yarn.
- Yarn Weight: I used worsted weight yarn. If you use a bulky or light weight yarn, use the recommended hook size.
- Yarn Fiber: I used acrylic yarn because it’s a durable yarn. Cotton yarn is also a great choice.

Pattern notes
- Make the bookmark following the color changes indicated by the graph or the written instructions.
- The bookmark is made in rows of single crochet stitches.
- Each square on the graph represents a single crochet stitch.
- The color of the square indicates the color of yarn you should use for that stitch.
- Read the graph from right to left ← on odd-numbered rows and left to right → on even-numbered rows, mirroring the direction that you crochet.
- You are working on the “right side” on odd-numbered rows.
- You are working on the “wrong” side” on even-numbered rows.
How to make color changes
- To change colors, work the last yarn over of a stitch with the new color. This sets up your yarn for the next stitch in the new color.
- Carry unused colors across the row by laying them over the stitches you’re working into, so you can pick them up as needed. This is known as tapestry crochet.
Crochet Bookmark Pattern Instructions
Start by chaining 12 with white yarn. Work a single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook and across. You’ll have 11 stitches for Row 1.
Continue following the bookmark pattern using the written instructions or heart bookmark graph.
Written Instructions
Crochet a border around the bookmark
Adding a single crochet border around your bookmark makes it look neat, makes the edges stronger, and makes it look nicer. Here’s how to do it step by step:
- Side Edges: Crochet one stitch at the end of each row along the sides. Adjust your spacing to keep the edge flat.
- Corners: Put three single crochet stitches in each corner stitch to make a neat turn and prevent the edges from curling.
- Top and Bottom Edges: Crochet one single crochet into each stitch along the top and bottom of the bookmark.
- Joining: Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.
Finishing the crochet bookmark pattern
Finish off each color yarn by cutting and weaving in the ends using a yarn needle to secure them.
Additional tips
- Keep Tension Even: Make sure your stitches are not too tight or too loose so your work stays flat and neat.
- Manage Yarns Carefully: Make sure your yarns do not get tangled by often untwisting them, especially if you are using bobbins or clips with different colors.
- Check Work Frequently: Keep checking your work with the pattern to make sure everything looks good.
